Award ceremonies have taken place this year, with changes in fluid scheduling caused by coronavirus pandemic. But the Primetime Emmys stick to their guns. Going in the opposite direction from the next Oscars and Cannes (pushed back and canceled), TV’s Big Night has committed to the date of the ceremony in September.

Will it need to adjust things closer to the show? Here is everything we know about the upcoming ceremony.

start time

The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards will take place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. ABC will broadcast the show live on Sunday 20 September at 20 ET or 17 PT.

Watch live for free

If you have one air antenna connected to your TV and get your local ABC station, you can watch for free.

How to watch Emmys live without cable

Cable TV cords have a number of options for watching the ceremony via a TV streaming service, detailed below.

Who is the host?

Jimmy Kimmel is hosting the show for the third time. Despite the good news, he acknowledged the tricky logistics.

“I do not know where or how or even why we do it, but we are and I am worth it!” Kimmel tweeted June 16th.

nominations

The nominations will be announced Tuesday, July 28 at 11:30 ET or 8:30 PT, via Emmy’s website.

Programs broadcast between 1 June 2019 and 31 May 2020 are eligible for submission. Despite production closures and other disruptions that saw the Television Academy postpone the submission deadline from May to June, Emmy’s submissions went so far this year that there will be extra nomination places to suit them.

Which shows are closest to nominations? Schitt’s Creek is certainly a shoo-in, while heavyweight Better Call Saul, The Handmaid’s Tale, Westworld, Big Little Lies and crown go up against wild cards Watchmen, Ramy, Mrs. America and The Morning Show. New streaming services will also be on the hunt for prestigious awards such as Apple TV Plus, HBO Max and Quibi is trying to steal some shine from established TV giants Netflix and HBO. But come Tiger King or The last dance become the crown king of documentaries? Check more Emmy suggestions and predictions here.
