Sluggish performance can usually be fixed with a few taps.

It’s easy to get frustrated when your iPhone does not work properly. Whether an app keeps crashing when you open it, or your phone keeps freezing when you go back to the home screen or try to send text, you expect your iPhone to work when you need it.

Do not worry. We show you where to look and what steps to take to solve common problems, such as general bugginess, battery life, storage space and more.

Correct mistakes and errors with this simple step

For random problems and bugginess, such as an iPhone that does not stay connected to Wi-Fi, continues to freeze or just runs slowly, forcing restart. It may sound obvious or boring, but it’s the same approach as restarting a computer that works and often cures anything that interferes with your iPhone.

Sometimes all it takes is a quick reboot.

Angela Lang / CNET

The process for forcing a reboot depends on your iPhone model:

  • For iPhones with a home button, you must hold the home button along with the lock / wake button for about 10 seconds or until you see the Apple logo.
  • For iPhone models that have Face ID, you need to press the following buttons in this order: press and release the volume, press and release the volume, and then hold down the side button for about 10 seconds, after which you should see the Apple logo.

No matter which method you use, it is important that you do not release the buttons until you see the Apple logo appear on the phone screen.

When your phone has come back to life, you unlock it with your password and it will hopefully be free of performance problems.

How to deal with bad battery life

For battery issues, start by looking at which apps or services log the most. You can view a battery usage chart by opening settings > Battery. Scroll down to the chart showing the battery usage per hour, with a list of apps and services along with the amount of battery they have used under it.

Look for a rogue app that runs in the background – you see “background activity” under the app name – or for an app usage that is higher than you think it should be.

I do not care if an app like Outlook has high background activity because it updates my inbox, but if there was an app, say Facebook, which is refreshing in the background and you do not want it to be done, here is what you should do. IN settings app, go to General > Background app update and turn off the app’s ability to update itself when you are not using it. It’s actually a good idea to go through this list and turn off all apps that you do not need to update in the background, even if it does not currently cause battery issues.

Alternatively, check the phone’s battery health on the Battery settings page (settings > Battery > Battery health) to see if the battery needs to be replaced.

Use Apple’s built-in tools to free up space.

Do you have little storage space?

Apple built a storage management tool into iOS it not only shows what is taking place, but also recommends steps you can take to solve the problem. Go to settings > General > iPhone storage and wait a few seconds while the information loads.

Go through the list of recommendations to see what steps Apple suggests you take. Then go through the list of apps to see which ones use the most storage space. Click on an app to see more information, including options for deleting data associated with the app. For example, the Music app lets you delete albums that you have downloaded to your device for offline access.

Software updates are easy to ignore.

More common problems and quick fixes

Of course, there are other steps you can take to restart your iPhone. Something as simple as a software update can be the key. Here are some more steps you can take:

  • Check for and install any pending software updates in settings > General > Software update.
  • If all else fails, download the Apple Support app and start a chat. The representative can go through more troubleshooting steps and access device logs (with your permission) to diagnose major problems.

When your iPhone is working properly, take the time to learn our favorite features coming to iOS 14 this fall. Apple’s update is currently in beta, which you can install right now, men you should probably wait a little longer.
