All apps that work with Picture in Picture (PiP) on your iPhone in iOS 14 «iOS & iPhone :: Gadget Hacks

Since iOS 9, the iPad has had Picture in Picture mode, which lets you minimize a video you watch in a floating overlay so you can multitask in other apps while it’s playing. But while there have been six Plus and Max models over the years, the iPhone had never had PiP windows – until now.

The best thing about the new PiP viewer is that it works on all iPhone models that support iOS 14. So it’s not just for the Plus or Max screens – all screen sizes work, including the small screen on the iPhone SE (2nd Generation).

However, developers need to add Picture in Picture support, so it does not work with all apps. See the lists below to see what works and does not play well with the PiP pointer. And let us know if you have found any others ̵

Solutions for incompatible apps

A notable omission is the YouTube app, which has its own PiP player that is stuck within the framework of the YouTube app itself. You can expect Google to add true PiP support to iOS 14, but there are two ways around it. These also work with other apps, such as Twitter, but not all.

The first way is to use a web browser to view the video. Because Safari, Chrome, Firefox and other iOS browsers support PiP mode, if you can play the video in one of them, you can PiP it. You do not even have to request the desktop space or anything else. Just play the video in the browser and then enable PiP mode. As for YouTube, a Reddit user built an iOS shortcut that opens a video from the YouTube app in Safari, so it’s a way to go about it.

If you do not want to use a web browser to watch the video, the second way is to use another third-party app that supports PiP mode, such as Pocket. If you save the video or the page with the video embedded in Pocket, you can open it at any time and watch it from there. Then enable PiP mode in the app.
