Apple Watch ($ 399 on Apple) learn some new tricks in WatchOS 7. Apple announced its latest software updates in June at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference and gave a sneak peek at the new features coming to their Apple watches. The update is expected later this fall (but you can give it a try WatchOS 7 public beta now) and includes a new set of dials, new workout options and built-in sleep tracking – the last one has been much anticipated during many years.

These features are only compatible with the Apple Watch Series 3 ($ 199 on Apple) or later, however, and some features are exclusive to Series 5. Here is a summary of 10 key new Apple Watch features announced at WWDC 2020.

Native sleep tracking is finally coming

The wait is over. Apple Watch users will finally be able to carry their watch to bed and track their sleep without having to download a third-party app. WatchOS 7 also helps users sleep in time by providing a way to relax from the day with a soothing bedtime routine. Once in bed, the Apple Watch uses its motion and heart rate sensors to determine when you have turned off and off all notifications. In the morning, look back on your sleep cycle to see if you woke up in the middle of the night and watch your progress over time.

To track sleep, the Apple Watch must charge at least 30 percent and it needs to be charged when you wake up. When the Apple Watch is fully charged, you will receive a message on your phone that it is ready to go.

Training and “new” fitness app

Maps now have directions for cycling.

Apple

The Zumba class can show that you have burned more calories in WatchOS 7. Apple has added dance, core training, functional strength and cooling to its list of training options on Watch. As such, the watch’s algorithm is specially adapted for these exercises and calorie tracking is more accurate.

Cyclists will also get a new navigation feature in Apple Maps that allows them to select routes based on time to destination, total distance or number of slopes.

The activity app, which contains the activity rings and the summary of your day, has been reconsidered in WatchOS 7. It will be called the Fitness app on both Apple Watch and iPhone. Although the app is still very similar to the watch, it has received a slight redesign on the iPhone. It has a more comprehensive summary page and a more intuitive way to quickly find your statistics.

WatchOS 7 keeps you honest about hand washing

You know that we go through some interesting times when hand washing gets almost as much air time as sleep tracking in the main figures. Apple Watch will use motion sensors and a microphone to calculate when you wash your hands and make sure you do it right. Once it is determined that you are at the sink, a 20 second countdown starts, which is the optimal duration based on the CDC guidelines. It may even remind you to do so as soon as you enter your house.

Other health features

WatchOS 7 takes the Noise app a step further by extending noise warnings to headphone levels. The Apple Watch already monitors ambient noise and alerts users when it reaches levels that can affect hearing loss. But now it will do the same thing when you listen to audio through your headphones from either your iPhone, iPod or Apple Watch. You will receive a notification if you have exceeded the recommended volume or listening time from the World Health Organization.

There is also a new heath measure that can help users get a feel for their mobility and cardiovascular ability. Old age or injuries can affect people’s balance and overall ability to move safely and efficiently. The Apple Watch uses its motion sensors (as well as the motion sensors on the iPhone) to get an idea of what this looks like over time, similar to a “6-minute walk test” that you would normally get in a lab. Sharing this information with a doctor can help detect mobility problems before they affect your health.

Share and discover new dials

Apple still does not allow third-party dials, but there will be more ways to customize your Apple Watch by customizing existing templates or adding multiple complications from the same app. Watch wearers can also share dials with each other via text, email or social media, or discover other looks collected by specific companies.

The Apple Watch also has a new Chronograph Pro option, which has a tachymeter in analog style that measures speed and distance, and has an extra large text option and new photo filters. And you’ll be able to add new complications for Apple’s camera, remote control, sleep and Shortcuts appar.

The car key function turns your watch into a key phobia

With the updates, your Apple Watch can become a key phobia for your car. You will not be able to issue car key permissions as on the iPhone, but you will be able to accept them if they are shared with you via the Wallet app. The car key feature will only be available on the Apple Watch Series 5 or later (provided we get one Series 6 in the fall), and will only be compatible with select BMW models until further notice.

Other iOS features

  • Apple Watch has built-in responses for the Message app
  • Siri can read back your texts when connected to headphones
  • Apple Watch will get a translation app that lets users translate entire conversations.
