AmazonBasics Microwave is an Alexa-connected heater that seems to be just the next step in smart appliance evolution.
Because it's not like your parents' microwave, there are some tips on how to use it that makes it easier. Here's what you need to know.
This is a 700 watt microwave, not the usual 1,000 watts you're probably used to, which means you need longer cooking times. If you use the AmazonBasics microwave, some guess is required, the microwave has some preprogrammed commands that can make things easier. Your best bet when you make commands is to simply tell Alexa what you heat and how big it is.
With drinks, tell Alexa how many cups you heat. For example, you can say, "Alexa, heat a cup of coffee." Alexa is preprogrammed to know how long it will heat so it comes out in steam cooking.
Heating and cooking
Beverages are quite simple. Foods are harder. You must be sure to indicate if you actually cook or just heat it up. Plus, sizes can be difficult.
If you heat a plate with different types of leftovers – think of a chicken breast, mashed potatoes and a side of vegetables – you would say, "Alexa, heat up a food plate." If you heat a specific dish, like a piece of lasagna, you must be more specific by saying "Alexa, heat 5 oz pasta."
For some foods, you do not need specific about the size. For example, you would say "Alexa cook a potato", instead of "Alexa, make an 8 oz potato." Potatoes, hot dogs and corn-on-the-cob seem to be the only exception to the size rule. You just need to let Alexa know how many of them you cook.
Alexa can calculate heating areas for foods that are around 0.5 to 3 cups (4 to 24 hydrogen ounces) or 3 to 32 oz. generally. However, there are some variations. Check out AmazonBasics full list of commands in this PDF.
One of AmazonBasics Microwave's most exciting features is that it can automatically order popcorn for you.
To set the Auto Popcorn Replenishment function, open the Alexa app, press the Devices icon (a small husform with spoons) and select Auto Popcorn Replenishment . Then follow commands on screen.
When you have taken your popcorn, you expect the microwave to calculate how many bags you heat up and will automatically arrange when you get a good deal on the good necessities.
If you ever want to stop delivering popcorn, change brands or change payment options, go to the Microwave Settings page of Alexa App.
Now that you have ordered popcorn sorted it is time to make some. You can use the "Alexa, cook 2 oz. Popcorn" command to get things started or press the Popcorn button .
Beware though. Amazon recommends microwave no more than 3 oz. of popcorn at a time. Large bags can burn because they do not fit properly on the small turntable.
Prevent bombs from contamination
As soon as your little ones see you talking to the microwave, they will also want, which can lead to chaos. Thankfully, this microwave comes with child lock function.
To enable child lock, press the pause button until the microwave signal beeps, then hold the 0 button for two seconds. Now the voice commands and keypad are turned off until you reset them. To turn off the child lock, just repeat these steps.
