The wait is over: Beyoncé’s Black Is King is now streamingand Beyhive buzz about their new visual album celebrating Black excellence and culture.
Beyoncé works as a writer, director and executive producer for the project, which picks up where her last albumstopped (see all options to hear that release below) and continues the visual album ambition she started with 2016’s Lemonade.
In an Instagram post, Beyoncé explained the goal of Black Is King.
“With the visual album, I wanted to present parts of black history and African tradition, with a modern twist and a universal message, and what it really means to find your self-identity and build a legacy,” she wrote.
Black Is King follows the stories of black families all the time and tells “a story about a young king’s transcendent journey through betrayal, love and self-identity,” Disney described in a press release. The young king’s loved ones help guide him to regain his home and faith.
The film has led to controversy among members of African society over its portrayal of African cultures. In the trailer Black is King (embedded below), the characters are seen with animal skins and face painting.
