Clear Facebook Shortcuts to Get Rid of Tabs and Message Points You Don’t Need «Smartphones :: Gadget Hacks

In the Facebook app for Android and iOS, the shortcut bar has some tabs required to go home or view notifications or settings. But there are other tabs there that can make the interface feel cluttered if you do not use them often or at all. Thankfully, there is a quick trick to getting rid of them for a cleaner navigation bar.

For me, I hated seeing the Marketplace tab in the navigation bar, especially when there were messages. The version of Facebook that I now have on my iPhone omits it, but my Android device still shows it as a tab. But that’s not all you need to worry about. There is also Facebook Watch, which contains all the videos on Facebook; Facebook groups, which show the latest from all your subscribed groups; and Facebook News, which contains news articles and videos suggested for you.

If you never check out Facebook Marketplace, Groups, News or Watch, there is an easy way to get rid of them. If you use these tabs but do not want to see the annoying message labels that everyone has, this trick will also help you tame them.

Option 1
: The fastest way to handle any shortcut

In Facebook, you hold (or press and hold) the tab in the shortcut bar for which you want to delete or manage notifications for a long time. On iOS, the bar is at the bottom, while on Android it is at the top.

An action sheet should appear at the bottom with some of your options.

  • Turn off message points: Pressing this prevents the annoying labels on the tab from appearing, letting you know that there is new activity to check out. This is a good option if you find the tab useful but do not like the demanding notifications.
  • Remove from shortcut bar: Pressing this removes the tab completely, and the remaining tabs will become more prominent as a result of filling the space. This is a good option if you never use them.

When you turn off notifications, it takes effect immediately. If you choose to delete the tab, after pressing that option, you will be asked if you are sure you want to delete it – press “Delete” to exit. When you only disable notifications, you can always press the tab again and select “Turn on notification characters” to reset.

Tabs that you can disable alerts or delete completely in this way include Groups, Watch, News and Marketplace. However, you may not see all of these tabs. For example, News is a relatively new tab and replaces the Marketplace tab in newer iOS interfaces.

Option 2: The fastest way to delete multiple shortcuts

If you want to get rid of multiple tabs, there is a quick way to do it all at once, but it works differently depending on your operating system. In the Facebook app for Android, tap (or tap and hold) a tab as in option 1 above, but this time select “Manage shortcut settings.” From here you can switch from groups, clock, marketplace and news.

In the Facebook app for iOS, tap (or tap and hold) a tab, then tap “Remove from shortcut bar” just like in option 1 above. As soon as you do this, the tab disappears and a warning appears to let you know that you can find it in Settings later. Press the “Settings” button before it disappears, and you can turn off Groups, Watch, Marketplace and News.

Option 3: The slowest way to remove multiple shortcuts

If you do not like shortcuts for shortcuts, as Option 2 shows, you can get to the shortcut bar preferences in the long run. In either the iOS or Android app, tap the triple tab on the right to open the menu. Then scroll down and tap “Settings and privacy”, then “Settings”.

From here you can search for “Shortcut bar” or just scroll down and press the option. Just like in option 2, you see switches for groups, Watch, Marketplace and News. Turn off the ones you do not want, and then turn off the settings.

Option 4: The slowest way to turn off shortcut messages

Option 1 is the best of both worlds because you can manage the message points and the tab itself, but there is another way to change only your message preferences.

In either the iOS or Android app, tap the triple tab on the right to open the menu. Then scroll down and tap “Settings and privacy”, then “Settings”.

From here you can search for “Notification Dots” or just scroll down and press the option. Just like in options 2 and 3, you see switches for groups, Watch, Marketplace and News. You can also see one for the menu tab. Turn off the ones you do not want, and then turn off the settings.
