Deleting iPhone apps is confusing in iOS 14. Here’s how to do it

Deleting apps is a necessary task, but it’s also a little more confusing after Apple’s latest update.

As long as I can remember the process of deleting an unwanted one iPhone app remained mostly the same. You would long press an app icon until all the icons started dancing (funny fact: Apple calls this “jiggle mode”), followed by tapping the “X” that appears in the upper left corner of the app. Then, poof, the app was gone.

But with the release of iOS 14 and the new The App Library, which works more like an applause that stores all the apps installed on your phone, the process has almost completely changed. Knowing how to delete an app is a skill you will need, especially if you are planning to upgrade to the app iPhone 12, which we expect it to be was announced as soon as 13 October. You want to make some preparations on your old phone to ensure a smooth transfer of your data.

Below I follow the new steps you take to delete an app or move it to your app library, which is comprehensive for apps you do not want on your home screen.

There are a couple of different ways to delete an app. To get started, you can long press an app icon until you see a pop-up menu. Depending on the app, the menu may have actions you can take. For example, the Mail app will have a shortcut to create a new email. In addition to app-specific actions, iOS 14 includes two system options: Delete the app and Edit the home screen.

Alternatively, you can hold on to the app icon for a few more seconds until all the app icons start dancing.

Whether you choose Delete the app from the pop-up menu, or if you press the new “-” sign on the app icon when in jiggle mode, you will get a whole new question: Ask if you want to delete the app or move it to the App Library.

Deleting the app deletes all data from your phone, freeing up valuable storage space. Moving it to your app library just removes the app icon from your home screen. The app remains installed and you can access it at any time by swiping from right to left on the home screen until you reach your app library.

If you use jiggle mode to clear unused apps, repeat the same steps until done, then tap Done or tap an empty area on the screen.

Delete apps that are in your app library

You do not have to move an app from the app library and back to your home screen to delete it from your phone. There are actually several ways to remove an app from the app library.

The first option is to tap the search bar at the top of your app library and search for the app you want to get rid of or scroll down until you find it. Press and hold the app icon until you see a pop-up menu, then select Delete app.

The second option is to find the app in its categorical folder, long press on it and then select Delete app from the popup. You can then continue deleting apps by pressing “X” after activating jiggle mode. Tap Done or leave the folder when you are done.
