A designer who created a set of amazing icons for popular iPhone apps has earned more than $ 100,000 in just one week after they are sold.
San Francisco-based Traf drew attention when technical reviewer Marques Brownlee talked about the sleek, minimalist icons in a recent show on his hugely popular YouTube channel.
Apple̵7;s latest launch of iOS 14 enables greater customization of the iPhone’s home screen using widgets – something that Android users have been able to do for several years.
While Apple still does not allow an easy way to change app icons, a new solution via the shortcut app also allows you to replace the regular icons with something more pleasing to the eye.
“I saw some people sharing screenshots of their iPhones after discovering that iOS 14 now lets you add custom icons to your home screen with the Siri Shortcuts app,” Traf wrote in a blog post about his experience creating the app icons. “This was the first time you could really customize iOS, and it worked.”
Traf continued: “As soon as I noticed the hype, I put together some icons in my own style, downloaded some widgets and tested everything. I thought it looked cool, so I shared a screenshot of it on Twitter. Immediately people started asking about the icons on the screenshot. ”
The sudden attention led him to set up an online store that sells the package of 120 icons for 28 dollars.
Traf said that when he woke up the next day, he saw that the tweet exploded on Twitter, with subsequent media attention that helped drive sales to about $ 6,000 in just 48 hours.
And then, towards the end of September, Marques Brownlee became involved.
He shared a video about all this – with my icons for his setting and linked them in the description. Next thing I knew, I made $ 28 on how it felt every 28 seconds. My phone became the ultimate dopamine dispenser (if it wasn’t already). I had to disable notifications. ”
Traf said that the next day, sales increased from $ 6 to about $ 40,000, and when he wrote the blog post at the end of last week, revenue was just over $ 116,000 from 4,188 customers.
The designer pointed out how the amazing rise in fortunes had all come from “a single tweet.”
However, it is worth noting that while many of the new app collections from different creators look pretty amazing, the solution has some limitations that can make you think twice before dropping money on a collection for your own iPhone.
Only when you open an app by tapping the icon does it take a little longer than usual because it first opens the shortcuts. The icons do not show message tags. Finally, you have to install the icons manually one by one, so it takes time to set up.
Traf said in a tweet that the restrictions have caused some of his customers to request a refund, because they were not aware of them when they bought. He has since published a tweet highlighting the problem.
The designer added that if he had gone out with the sole goal of making money, he is convinced that “it would not have worked nearly as well as it did” and added that he decided to share his experience because he wanted to inspire others “to keep working on the things you like, share them with the world and let the internet do the rest.”
