Disney is investing heavily in the 2019 streaming service called Disney +.
With Disney CEO Bob Iger calling the streaming service as the company's "top priority" for 2019, the companyso that it can start its own service as an exclusive streaming home for Disney movies, TV programs and other original programming.
Most of the planning planned for Disney + leans into the company's franchises like Marvel and Star Wars. Captain Marvel, Brie Larson superhero flick coming to theaters in March, will be the first of his films to stream on Disney + rather than Netflix.
If you feel the monthly fee fatigue, sorry, but that's the direction the entertainment business is heading. Netflix defies original programs and movies on almost daily basis. CBS pumps its CBS All Access service full ofand other original programs. (Editor's note: CBS is CNET's parent company.) HBO Owner and builds all their own streaming services. Even DC Entertainment now has its full of shows, movies and series.
And then there is Hulu, who willafter the acquisition of 21
So is the 2019 Disney + streaming service something worth paying for? The details we know so far lie below, but basically: If you love Star Wars or Marvel movies, you may think that you are considering another subscription before the year is out.
On November 8, Disney announced a Star Wars prequel series based onand starring Diego Luna, who played Cassian Andor in the original movie. Disney also confirmed that the service focused on Loki, a character from Avengers, who will steal Tom Hiddleston who replays the role. Even Marvel Defenders show that Netflix has suspended – like Daredevil and Luke Cage – can be revived for Disney +.
What is the Disney streaming service?
will be a competitor of video streaming services like Netflix. Customers will be able to subscribe with an unannounced monthly fee to access television programs, movies and other content from the Disney world.
Disney's other streaming services – Hulu and sports-focused ESPN + – will run on the same technology platform so you can subscribe to them with the same password and credit card info. But Disney plans that all three should be individual subscriptions.
ESPN + will clearly focus on sports. Hulu is expected to continue streaming content from three of the broadcast network and its own original series, such as The Handmaid's Tale and Castle Rock. Hulu will also be where Disney streams her more adult fare. That's where a new Marvel collection of adult animated series will flow, and it's like Deadpool-like content will live when Disney takes over Fox.
Disney + will include all of Disney's family-friendly fares. It will have content from Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm (so: Star Wars), Pixar and National Geographic.
When is the release date?
You wait even further thanfor this. Disney says it is launching a release at the end of 2019.
The company is expected to reveal many of the details of Disney + April 11 when it will hold an investor meeting to detail all its streaming plans, including a "first look" on Disney + and some of the programming it produces for it.
How much does it cost?
Disney has not yet announced pricing for its streaming service, but.
In November 2017, Iger said that his company's service award will reflect the "fact that it will have significantly less volume" but plans to offset high quality programming from its entire entertainment range. More than a year later, Iger said that the companywhat it would take.
How does this affect Disney stuff on Netflix?
Disney comes disappearing from Netflix by 2019.
Since 2016, Netflix has been the first placewith a subscription. This agreement meant that Netflix was in place for the largest US blockbusters over the past three years. The two best films in 2017 and the three best films in 2016 and 2018 were all from Disney, and Netflix has been the place to bend them all.
Butbecause it plotted its own competitor. From Disney's 2019 slate films, all movies are dedicated to Disney +. That means the first movie Disney releases the theater in 2019, will be the first movie Netflix lacks. It also means that should be the last Disney movie that will have some sort of release window on Netflix.
However, Netflix's Marvel Defenders show is complicated. Netflix has released five original series based on Defenders' characters in partnership with Disney. In 2018, Netflix interrupted three of them: Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Since 2019,: The Punisher and Jessica Jones. Disney's Disney + executive director Kevin Mayer has said that Disney + could revive the suspended programs. But the terms of their original agreement could limit Disney + from according to a report.
A third and now last season by Jessica Jones is still set to arrive at Netflix sometime in 2019. But after that, all we know about the future of these characters is Marvel Head of TV's Jeph Loeb who teases fans as the characters will continue in some form. But the only thing that is certain about this form right now: It won't involve Netflix.
Exhibitions and movies: What can I watch?
Disney plans to make Disney + catch-all for its family-friendly content, while Hulu – as Disney will check after the takeover of 21st Century Fox – will subscribe to a newer, more adult-oriented fare. Disney + will be the only place you can stream all of Disney's theater movies from the 2019 slate. It includes content from the Disney brand itself, Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars and National Geographic. In fact, it organizes the service's app from the exact categories.
In addition to live-action shows and movies, the animation is thought to be "integrated" to Disney +, says Iger. Disney + will also have original documentaries behind the scene. Of the great library in Disney's past catalog, Disney + should provide "thousands of hours" of content, but we don't know exactly what will be included.
The company has also started making agreements for original programming that do not already fall into one of the established brands. In January, Disney + ordered a 10-episode series called Diary for a Female President. The exhibition follows a 12-year-old Cuban-American girl and heights and falls in her middle school on the road to becoming the American boss.
Although all Disney movies will be streaming exclusively on Disney +, the company does not plan to debut any of its major budget images, such as those in itson the service. Unlike Netflix's so-called day-and-day approach, which releases most of its films on large screens and on its streaming service at the same time, Disney plans to let their tent-pole movies run their course in theaters before being made available with a Disney + digital subscription.
