Ditch Apple Mail and Safari with iOS 14 and iPadOS 14’s new standard app feature

iOS 14 iPhone Widgets Beta

You can finally set up default apps on your iPhone or iPad.

For the first time ever, Apple gives users more control over iOS and iPadOS. With the release of iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, you can now put widgets on the home screen, and there is even one applause. But perhaps more specifically, you can completely ditch Apple’s Mail and Safari apps by choosing another app as your default entry or browser.

This is a big step for the iPhone ($ 699 on Amazon) and iPad ($ 285 at Back Market) users, and one that was very late.

The process is very simple, but it is somewhat hidden. It’s not like Android, where there is a special section for setting default apps. You need to know where to look and below we show where it is.

Before we begin, you should know that there is an error in iOS 14

Apple is aware of an error in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 which resets your default choices to Apple’s own apps when you restart your iPhone or iPad. The company told CNET in a statement that the issue would be resolved in a future update, but for now it means that when you restart your device, you will need to go through the steps below to set up your default app again.

Set your default entry or browser

Once your app has been selected has been updated for iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, by adding support to be set as the default app, here is what you need to do:

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.

2. Scroll down until you find the app you want to use. For example, find Google Chrome if you want it to be your primary browser. Or Outlook if you want to use it as your email app. Then press it.

3. Choose the appropriate option, either Default browser app or Default email app.

4. Select the app and withdraw the settings.

With a new default app set when you click on a link, your browser opens. Or when you press an email address, your email app starts. It’s time for Apple to add this feature. If only that error correction could be released, we do not need to continue to restore it.

Standard apps are not the only hidden feature in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 – we found a lot. Of course, there are some headline features that change how you use your iPhone or iPad, and there are even some new privacy features that should keep your information more protected.
