Google recently announced that Google Maps will return to watchOS after disappearing from the platform in 2017. Now Maps for Apple Watch is rolling out through a new app update, although it lacks some of the standard watchOS features you get with Apple Maps.
Once you’ve selected a destination via the Google Maps app on your iPhone, your Apple Watch displays an ETA and directions. You can browse through the list of directions on your Apple Watch or change your travel mode from driving to walking, cycling or public transport.
But unlike Apple Maps, Google Maps for the watchOS app can not display an actual map. You can not program destinations via Apple Watch, and the portable app only works when your Apple Watch is connected to your iPhone.
Google still has a good start. Maps on the Apple Watch provide everything the average user needs to drive or walk around the city, including a haptic warning system for incoming turns. The missing features can only mean for people who regularly walk, run or cycle without carrying their iPhone.
