Google turns annual Android Partner Walk at MWC to showcase for ARCore «Mobile AR News :: Next Reality

Last week at Mobile World Congress 2019, Google puts an enlarged reality distortion on its annual Android Partner Walk via its ARCore Toolkit.

For the uninitiated, Android Partner Walk is a scavenger hunt for the collector pins hidden by MWC's exhibition halls. The game doubles as a means of encouraging participants to visit all of Google's different Android partners, such as Samsung, Qualcomm, LG and Lenovo, as the pins are hidden near their booths.

This year challenged instead of give away physical stick participants with ARCore compatible devices to use Android Partner Walk to find and scan QR codes located throughout the event space. Those who gathered all the virtual pins were eligible for a chance to win a prize on Android Avenue Info Kiosk.

"Android Partner Walk is always a fun stack for MWC participants, but this year we decided to throw some AR in the mix. So you can collect virtual Android pins simply by opening the camera and following the clues," The Chennapragada monkeys, Google's Vice President of Google Lens and AR, in a tweet .

When scanning code with the app, players could unlock animated AR scenes with unique Android characters and then save the experience in their passport Participants can also capture images of the characters to share with other apps.

"It was great to see the MWC's smile and surprise as they gathered their AR Android sticks. There were people in business drafts, roaming on the show floor between meetings, engaged in a gathering experience where they were willing to go long distances to meet the challenge, "wrote Joshua To, design director and Steve Toh, designer of Google's AR / VR team. "We put a lot of care into developing the 21 completely animated 3D scenes and were happy people enjoyed them."

The app also served as AR navigator, pointed players towards the next pin (although a 2D guide book also gave users a traditional map to all of AR pins).

"When we thought of the AR companion on that experience, the problem became clear: How do we point the person to the next partner booth? This issue is one that AR is outstandingly equipped to solve, "wrote To and Toh.

" We took some lessons from Google Maps to help us design the scavenger hunt's AR elements. We made every floor decal unique, with a scan that would tell the users where they are in the Android Partner Walk and enable us to point them to the unshuffled pins nearby. The app also serves as a prominence for ARCore, especially its surface detection capability and newer Augmented Images feature , an image recognition protocol that can make 2D images into 3D virtual experiences, and also shows the ARCore Elements, Android's new standard visual language for AR user interfaces.

In addition, the app offers a case study to use AR to engage different audiences working Against a similar goal, Google aims to showcase what its partners do with Android Nowadays, Niantic has shown municipalities how they can use site-based games like Pokémon GO to support community engagement.

The morality of history is that it is not enough to have AR technology in an app; App developers also need to give users a reason to use apps.
