Back in the Nexus days, Google’s hardware strategy was very different from most OEMs. It can be said that OnePlus came in with a similar mantra a few years later, focusing on good hardware at an affordable price tag. Of course, there were compromises, but even then it resulted in real taxes like the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 5.
Fast forward to 2013, and Google reversed the course. It decided that it wanted to appeal to a wide audience and compete with Samsung and Apple. This new philosophy resulted in the Pixel range, flagship performance with excellent cameras, but at a premium cost.
That same year, OnePlus came out to fill the gap. Their “flagship killer”;, OnePlus One, gave customers the very best at a hundred dollars cheaper than the competition. But over the years, OnePlus has been hit by price creeps until they hit the $ 1,000 mark in 2020.
At the same time, Google is turning the course again. They already offer many of the same benefits as OnePlus phones, and this year, for the first time in Pixel history, Google is releasing three phones for under $ 700, one of which is a flagship that can compete with the more expensive alternatives.
A Premium flagship
At the beginning of OnePlus, the company only released one phone per year, which usually arrived in April or May. Although in recent years this release cycle changed due to need, it was this start that helped grow their original popularity.
A phone means you do not have to choose different sizes or hardware. You have a choice where you always have the best device they offer.
This year, that’s exactly what Google plans to do. Google Pixel 5 will be the first Pixel not released with an XL model. You do not have to choose between screen size or resolution – there is only one option to choose from, the premium flagship model.
A flagship with a budget
Despite the price drop this year, the Pixel 5 will be released for $ 699, the lowest price since Google Pixel 2. But do not expect to lose the flagship specifications at this price. Pixel 5 still retains its industry-leading camera performance, stereo speakers and an A +-rated display from DisplayMate. It will also have a higher refresh rate display for cloud and mobile games.
So what is lost at this price? Just like before in OnePlus, Pixel 5 will make some compromises to stay affordable, namely to use Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G.
This is a new 700-series 5G chipset from Qualcomm that gives flagship performance, just not this year. Benchmarks show that it is compatible with Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, the flagship SoC 2017. So even though it will not be the fastest phone, you do not have to lower graphics settings in games or experience any slowdown when performing normal tasks such as social media.
Stock Android with extra benefits
In addition to their low price-to-performance ratio, OnePlus is also known for its software. Oxygen OS is widely regarded as a “layer with a little extra”, which means that they have left the AOSP experience mostly intact while adding tweaks, new tools and features that make their software the gold standard for Android skins.
Under the Nexus range, Google delivered almost a pure stock experience with no extra frills. But with Pixel, Google changed that strategy. The version of Android running on Google Pixel 4a is not the same as the pure Android device as in the Android One application. It has exclusive features and apps like an AI-enhanced voice recorder, a spam blocker, an offline song identifier and much more. Google has also added some customization options to give your menus some style.
Now it is the case that OnePlus must fight to keep its “share with a little extra” krona.
Unlockable starter charger
In the United States, there are only a handful of phones that allow you to unlock the starter charger, most of which are either very old or intermediate. Pixel and OnePlus have led the charge in this area and have one of the simplest methods for unlocking a starter loader.
OnePlus is usually the better option due to the lower price, but Pixel 5 will change that. While retaining the same simple method of unlocking the starter charger at its new price tag, the Pixel 5 will likely take OnePlus’ place here.
An active rooting community
Just because you can unlock the bootloader does not mean you want to. If you do not have any changes to your phone, why jeopardize your phone’s security?
Google Pixels is the only collection of phones that competes with OnePlus’ range thanks to today’s release of source sources, as well as everything else developers need to create changes. At Google Pixel 5’s new lower price, expect to see an even more active community.
Getting frequent updates is another benefit of OnePlus devices. Their cheap smartphones include a promise of three years of security updates and two software updates. In recent years, the latter has gotten better as OnePlus worked tirelessly to reduce the time it took to release the latest version of Android to its devices.
But this does not compare to Google Pixel. As the owner of the operating system, Google first tests and releases the latest software on its device. Security fixes also reach their phones first, usually days before anyone else. The software support “2 + 1” that OnePlus offers its phones best actually by Google, which will issue security updates and full Olympic upgrades for three full years.
Midway to an entry price
But there are things that Google does that OnePlus did not do or only does now. It was this year that OnePlus finally created a mid-range lineup known as the North. Google jumped into this category last year, and it became the best-selling Pixel phone. And although this range does not have all the watches and whistles from other phones in the price range, it has two distinct advantages – price and camera performance.
At $ 349, there are few phones in the US that are lower, all are Android Go-powered or start-level devices. And then there’s the camera. Usually, phones at this price point do what they can. But with Google already taking the strategy to recycle the same old camera hardware and improve it with machine learning, it’s not surprising that the Pixel 4’s camera works almost identically to the more expensive Pixel 4, which is already one of the best smartphone cameras on the market.
