You are either using Bixby, Samsung's virtual assistant, or you are not. If it is later, you may be wondering what to do with the dedicated Bixby Key on the side of phones like Galaxy S10, S9 and S8, which cannot be disabled. Well, Samsung ran an update that allows someone to retrieve the button to open another app on the phone.
Return to the button should work on any of the following phones:
Go to the Galaxy Store app, which is located in the App box and press the triple point icon at the top right. Go to My Page, and Update . If you are unable to reshape the Bixby button, there should be an update waiting to be downloaded here.
Returning the Bixby key
The Bixby key still opens Bixby in one way or another. The update allows you to launch another app through a single press (when a double press opens Bixby), or through a double press (where a single press opens Bixby). If you press and hold the button, you will also start Walkie-talkie mode for Bixby. Unfortunately, there is no built-in way to use the button to open Google Assistant, but we get it in a second.
When you have the update, go to Settings> Advanced Features> Bixby Key . We recommend that you select Double click to open Bixby which means that you just need to press the button once to start another app. Press Use entry key and then press the shift icon next to Open the app . Look for the app you want to start – it can even be the camera – and choose it. That's all! You have successfully labeled the Bixby button.
You also see the option to trigger a hotkey when you press the Bixby key. Hotkeys let you trigger a series of actions on your phone when you say a phrase. For example, if you say I am running, you can turn off Wi-Fi in your phone, turn on Bluetooth and start playing a "Commute" playlist if you have one. Attaching a quick command to the Bixby key would mean that you do not have to say it loudly and can only press the button instead. Considering that there is a good chance of pressing Bixby Key by mistake, you may be using it as a Double Press instead.
Resetting the Bixby key to open Google Assistant
If you use Google Assistant a lot, you may want to start it with a dedicated button instead of pressing the home button. There is a way to do that, but it requires a third-party app (which can always be a cause for security concerns). The app and instructions come from XDA Developers.
We first recommend that you go to Settings> Biometrics and Security> Install unknown apps and press Chrome or Samsung Internet – what your default browser is currently is. Switch on Allow from this source . You can change this later, but this lets the browser download unidentified files, which is necessary if you want to start Google Assistant with Bixby Key.
Now go to this link and download the XDAs Bixby Remapper APK. We have tried it on several phones and the process has worked smoothly. Follow the instructions to download the app and then install it.
After installing, return to Settings> Advanced Features> Bixby Key . Press Use single tap and then the gear icon next to Open the app. Look for an app called Bixby Button Assistant Remapper . It is.
Tap the Bixby button, and you should get a choice to open Google Assistant or Bixby (or it automatically launches Google Assistant) – tap Google Assistant and then press Always to make sure it will always open Google's AI
There you go now you can use Bixby Key to launch Google Assistant.
