The 5G data network is the next big thing for your phone and promises 2x to 10x faster download speeds, as technology is starting to roll all over the world. But global 5G networks are in their infancy, and the coverage is spotty in these early days . A new global 5G coverage map from Ookla, the manufacturer of the popular Speedtest.net app, provides a detailed look at which 5G networks live in a particular location from a particular network and whether that coverage is commercially available or limited.
To use it:
1: Navigate to www.speedtest.net/ookla-5g-map.
2: Drag the map to find the country you are interested in.
3: Click on the bubble to see how many areas have 5G coverage, from which network.
4: Use the + control to zoom in on the map and click on the bubble again for more detailed information, eg if there are several cities across a country with different active 5G networks. You may find that you need to zoom in quite a bit to find specific places in specific cities.
Currently, the map maps 305 5G implementations and 20 wireless carriers, over 294 cities. Ookla says it will update its tracking map every week with verified public sources (such as an operator message) and Ookla's own data, from people using the Speedtest.net app in 5G coverage areas.
5G network dogs can also follow the @ Ookla5GMap Twitter account for real-time updates to the tracking map.
