How to activate dark mode on your phone, laptop and game consoles

Dark mode is a feature that allows you to change the color theme of an app or a completely stationary operating system, to black or something close to it. In addition to the excitement of encouraging a tired design, some like to have the possibility that it is a little easier to look at your devices. Using a smartphone that has an OLED screen can also save a little battery life.

Today, there is official support for dark location in many places. for example, at the operating system level in MacOS Mojave and on the Nintendo Switch. Dark mode is also available in several popular apps, including Slack, Twitter and Google Chrome. But it is not everywhere yet.

If you are curious about whether your favorite app or platform supports dark mode, we follow all developments. If it doesn't, but you are keen to experiment, there may be some third-party solutions depending on your device. Anyway, here are some ways that you can put darkness in your day ̵

1; or night.

However, before attempting to move the mountains, it is worth remembering that any unofficially dark mode is likely to be imperfect and the app compatibility may be a mixed bag for you.

How to Get Dark Mode on Your iPhone

If you are an iPhone user, you probably already know that iOS does not support officially dark mode. IOS 12 currently offers a smart color converter that almost achieves the effect. It is an accessibility feature that, according to Apple, "reverses the colors of the display, in addition to images, media, and some apps that use dark color styles."

Unlike a conventional color converter, it excludes some but not all elements on the screen from being inverted. It works surprisingly well with Apple's own pre-installed apps, as well as apps that support dark mode, such as YouTube. But jumping into Apple Maps, and other apps not yet dark, make inverted which can crush.

Enable smart color version:

  • Touch the setting app.
  • Scroll down and tap General and then Accessibility.
  • The fourth option from the top should be Visa accommodation. Press it and find Invert Colors in the menu and press it.
  • Turn on the Smart Invert option.

If that is not what you hope for, full support may come when an iOS 13 debuts according to a January 2019 report from Bloomberg . Similar to the implementation of the dark mode in macOS Mojave, the next major software update for iPhones can work with the operating system-level feature, which affects the iOS user interface. It can even let your third-party applications run in the dark, so that Google Chrome and the Firefox apps automatically switch to dark mode when you have the setting enabled on the macOS Mojave.

A growing list of apps, including YouTube, Twitter, Facebook Messenger, Slack and Microsoft Outlook, support dark mode on iOS. But if you do not want to jailbreak your iPhone, it is not possible to activate the dark mode of the entire system.

How to get dark mode on your Android phone

As with IOS, Android still does not support dark mode for all phones. The story is a bit different depending on which phone you have, but even if dark modes exist, there are usually some limitations.

If you own a Samsung phone that has Android 9 Pie via Samsung's One UI update, you can enable Night mode by opening the Settings menu in your appbox, going to the Display option and switching Night mode. My colleague Dieter Bohn says that this feature, among others, is "really useful", but it is not without problems. For example, if you have Night mode, the Android software confuses Auto in-car to think it's night all day, according to Android Police .

For Pixel phones running the latest software, as well as others having Android One software help, you can also turn on a dark mode, but it's not as comprehensive as Samsung's solution. The drop-down tray will remain white as well as the message boxes that fill in your lock screen. To activate its dark mode:

  • Find the setup menu and press View> Advanced.
  • You will find "Device theme" at the bottom of the function list. Activate the dark setting.

No matter which phone you own, if it runs Android 9 Pie, you can set night mode to stay all the time – but you must have development options (which give you access to some extras) enabled first.

  • To enable Developer Options, open Settings and then tap "About Phone."
  • Right at the bottom of this screen you see "Building Number". Press it seven times. This gives you access to the developer options, which you can then find in Settings by going to System> Advanced> Developer Options.
  • Scroll until you see Night mode near the bottom of the first part of the menu. You can set it to "Always on" or "Automatically (based on time of day)."

If you want a quick, simple blackout solution for your phone, you can download a launcher from the Google Play store. Nova Launcher, to name one of several examples, is free and allows you to switch most of your Android user interface – including the appbox, search bar, and app groups on your home page – to dark mode. There are still some areas where the default color cannot be overridden, such as the messaging drop-down window or Google Chrome.

More and more Android apps support dark mode, but depending on your phone, you may need to keep waiting for a systemless solution. And while there are no tips on an imminent dark position in Android Q beta, there have been rumors that we can see the function a little closer to the entire release.

How to get dark mode on your MacOS computer

If you use the latest MacOS Mojave software, it comes with a system-wide dark mode. As mentioned above, this feature switches the color gamut of the user interface, and it can automatically trigger dark mode to switch to other third-party applications built to support it. Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, to name two examples, automatically switch to dark mode if they detect the feature running on your computer.

Enable dark mode on a computer running macOS Mojave:

  • Open the system settings by clicking the Apple logo in the upper left corner of your screen.
  • Click General.
  • At the top of the menu window, you see the option to change the appearance of the interface to Dark in Appearance. [19659036] Apple's own apps (like Mail, Maps, Notes, TextEdit and Dynamic Desktop) each have a dark mode that can be turned on – they won't automatically turn dark mode on. Depending on the app, the switch will be either in the View or Settings setting. While Safari does not have a dark mode, Safari Reader lets you change the background to black.

If you just want dark mode sometime, third-party apps like f.lux and NightOwl can automatically change color

How to get dark mode on your Windows 10- computer

It's quite easy to switch to dark mode in Windows 10. As with most dark modes, Microsoft's implementation doesn't extend to every single window you open on your Windows 10 computer or desktop. It works on most apps that come preinstalled with the operating system, but there are some that just aren't flattened, don't support it, including WordPad and Microsoft Edge.

  • To set the dark mode on your computer, first go to the Customize menu within the system settings, which you can quickly pull up by right-clicking on the desktop.
  • Select Colors on the sidebar. Under App mode, select the Dark option to enable dark mode.

How to get dark position on the game console

If you play games, you probably also want dark mode on the game console. Thank goodness, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch all offer some kind of option to enable a dark mode, although in some cases it is just a theme.

PS4

PlayStation 4 has no dark mode built-in, but you can get something close to it by personalizing your theme.

  • Go to Settings in the upper navigation bar.
  • Look for a section called Themes and click Default in that section. In this section, you can change the background color, so if you are looking for a quick solution to make the interface darker, you can choose the black background.
  • If it doesn't, you can download a custom theme from PlayStation Store that suits your style. Inside the themed menu you will find a quick link that will take you straight to where you can browse for free and paid themes.

Xbox One

Microsoft's game console offers relatively robust theme accessories, allowing you to change the color of the operating system interface and its smaller details , for example, Achievement blips.

  • To get started, press the Xbox button on your controls and then select Settings from the pop-up menu.
  • Select Customization> Theme and Motion.
  • You can now turn on dark mode. You also have the option of having your Xbox switch back and forth between light and dark depending on a user-defined time, or just according to sunrise and sunset.
  • If you want to synchronize the background color and the accent around them, navigate to "My color and background" in the Custom menu and then select "My color."

Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch console is standardized to a white background, but changing it to black is easy. When you do, the theme will be implemented through most of the portable console's user interface, with the exception of the eShop and NES app included free with Nintendo Switch Online.

  • Navigate to System Settings within the string of buttons found at the bottom of the main menu.
  • Find your way down to the Themes setting, and then turn on the Basic Black option to enable the Switch version of dark mode.
