How to activate it

Facebook Messenger for Android has been given an experimental dark mode after being first suggested at the end of May (via Android Police ). The feature comes after several other latest development programs for Dark Mode applications that Google prepares for built-in Dark Mode support in Android Q.

Although the functionality is said to be available to all users, it is a work in progress and comes with something unconventional activation method.

How to enable dark mode in Facebook Messenger:

  1. First, you need to send a yellow half moon yogi to someone (yes seriously) . Important note: Not just any old-fashioned emoji would work. The specific, faceless crescent seen in the pictures above is the right one (I feel that the dark moon could have been more appropriate but I come across it).
  2. This will result in a moon rain pulling over the screen followed by a popup saying that the function can now be activated.
  3. You're not quite finished yet. Finally, go to App Settings and you will find a Dark Mode switch. Tap it to turn it on.
  4. That's it! Keep in mind that once you have activated the function, it will always remain in the App Settings, which makes it easy to turn on and off.

The dark mode is found in most menus, making them a little easier on your eyes if you watch the night. The feature does not seem to be available in Facebook Lite yet, but we will notify you when we discover it as well.
