How to add captions to photos and videos on iPhone and iPad

iPhone users Add a caption to a photo
Khamosh pathak

An avid iPhone and iPad user ends up with thousands of photos in their library. If you do not want to organize photos in albums, you can use the caption feature introduced in iOS 1

4 and iPadOS 14 to describe a photo or video on your iPhone and iPad.

When you add a caption to a photo or video, it is indexed by the Photos app and you can search for the keywords later. While the Photos app has an automatic photo search engine, it is not very specific or reliable. With the help of captions, you can take control of the photos you know you may want to search later.

The Photos app automatically groups the same captions, so you can use this feature as a temporary tagging system. You can give the same captions to multiple photos to quickly find them together.

Open the “Photos” app on your iPhone or iPad and navigate to the photo you want to add captions to. Then drag up on the photo to reveal additional options.

Drag the image from Photos

This shows you photo information including where the photo was taken. Just below the photo, tap the blank text area called “Add a caption.”

Click Add Caption

Write your subtitles here. Click the “Done” button in the upper right corner.

Tap Done after writing the caption

You can repeat the process for all the photos and videos to which you want to add a caption. You can also come back here at any time to edit the caption.

Caption is displayed with image

The photo app will now start indexing the caption. To find a photo or video based on a caption, go to the “Search” tab, then tap the “Search” bar at the top and enter a word or phrase from one of your captions.

Click the Search bar

Now scroll all the way to the bottom of the page. Here you will find a section “Captions”. Select a caption to see photos related to it.

Touch a caption

If you have multiple photos or videos with the same caption, you will see a photo count on the right edge. Tap the caption to view all photos and / or videos.

Caption with a single image

When you share a photo or video with AirDrop or iCloud, app photos also automatically share captions. You can deactivate this from the stock sheet. Press the “Share” button to get to the stock sheet.

Click the Share button in the Photos app

Select the “Options” button from the top.

Touch Options from Split Sheet

Click here on the switch next to the “Captions” option to disable sharing photos with captions.

Press to switch next to captions
