How to block blocked sites

Some governments, schools, and businesses are trying to block websites to reduce distractions, save bandwidth, or censor content. If you want to circumvent such restrictions and you are willing to take on any risks, you can try getting a VPN or virtual private network.

How VPN Works

A VPN creates a secure tunnel between your computer and a server in another location. When connecting to a VPN server, all communications travel through that tunnel, so third parties cannot monitor it. In this setting, your online identity – your IP address – becomes anonymous, and you can access blocked sites.

Mullvad offers a variety of countries and cities where you can base your online activities.

VPN also offers a high level of security because all data passing through the VPN network is encrypted.

Try AnchorFrees Hotspot Shield for a free, ad-supported introduction to access blocked sites via VPN. However, if you want to use a VPN for all or your online activity, it is wise to go up to a paid service, which usually costs a few dollars a month.

Our current overall favorite VPN is Mullvad-but you can read more about how VPN works and compare a variety of VPN products by reading our list of VPN services.

Note: A VPN requires you to download an app to your computer. If your situation makes it impossible, you know that most VPN services offer a mobile component, allowing you to bypass the Wi-Fi network's IP constraints from your phone.
