When creating charts or graphs in Google Sheets, you do not need to follow the default layout. Google Sheets automatically tries to select your X and Y axes, which you may want to change or change.
To do this, you need to open your Google Sheets spreadsheet and select your chart or chart. Once your chart is selected, click on the three-point menu icon in the upper right corner and then select “Edit Chart”; from the drop-down menu.
Alternatively, you can right-click on the chart and select the “Data Range” option from the pop-up menu.
Both options show the “Chart Editor” panel on the right, where you can change the style and data settings of your chart.

Under the “Settings” tab, you will see the columns currently used for the X and Y axes under the “X-Axis” and “Series” options. The first column listed under “Series” is used for the Y-axis.
If you want to change these, you can do it manually by changing labels in the “X-axis” and “Series” options.
For example, a chart below shows the product sales of computer devices, with prices and sales dates. Prices are currently used for the X-axis, while sales dates are used for the Y-axis.
To change this data, click on the current column listed as the “X-axis” in the “Chart Editor” panel. This displays the list of available columns in your dataset in a drop-down menu.
Select the current Y-axis label to replace your existing X-axis marking from this menu. In this example, “Date Sold” would replace “Price” here.
If the data is correct, this will give you a chart that has the same data as the X and Y axes. You must repeat these steps for the first column listed under the “Series” category to replace the Y-axis next.
In this case, replace “Date Solid” (the current Y-axis and the new X-axis label) under “Series” with the “Price” column (the original X-axis label) from the drop-down menu.
If the columns provide correct data to form the X and Y axes of the chart, the chart is updated so that the axes have been replaced.
For this chart example, the “Price” column is now listed in the vertical Y-axis on the left, while the “Sold Date” column (with sales date) is displayed on the horizontal X-axis at the bottom.
If the selected columns are incorrect, you can remove them from your chart completely by clicking the three-point menu icon next to a column listed under the “X-Axis” or “Series” categories, and then clicking “Remove” from i drop-down menu.
After deleting a column from the X or Y axes, you must add it again by clicking the “Add X axis” or “Add series” box and then selecting a new column from the drop-down menu. menu.
This will then update your chart to display the new X or Y axis using the data you selected.
