When it comes to CarPlay, Apple does not allow you to change much of the look of the infotainment system. Thankfully, as long as you run iOS 14 or higher on your iPhone, you can change the CarPlay background. Here’s how.
Start by connecting your iPhone to your vehicle that includes CarPlay with a USB to Lightning cable (unless your car or truck supports wireless connections). When CarPlay starts on your infotainment screen, press the App Grid button in the lower left corner. This step is only necessary if you are viewing the overview screen or an open app.
Then select the “Settings” app. You may need to swipe between the home screens to find the application.
From the settings menu, press the “Background” option.
You will now be presented with several wallpapers that change appearance when CarPlay is in dark or light mode. Select one of the available wallpapers to see a live preview on your main unit.
Select the “Set” button if you like the look of the wallpaper. If not, press the “Cancel” button and select another background.
Sorry, at the time of writing, you can not use your own photo as a background image in CarPlay. But do not worry, changing the background of CarPlay will not change the background of your iPhone.
