For the most part, new features for Google Maps, such as Live View augmented reality navigation, come to Android first.
An exception is to change your vehicle icon in driving navigation, which now comes to Android after debuting on iPhones and iPads.
In both versions, however, the ability to select your navigation icon is not very obvious. How to use.
Step 1: Update Google Maps
Google Maps for iOS already has this feature, so you do not need to update your app. However, this is new for Android. In fact, as of this writing, the official support page for this feature states that it is not available for Android. So Android users want to keep up and keep their apps up to date.
Step 2: Navigate to a location
Open Google Maps and use the search bar to find a destination for navigation. If you have no place in mind, you can also use Explore to discover a place nearby.
On the location information page, press the Start button to start navigating. Or press the Directions button if you need to make adjustments to your trip, such as adding stops, selecting routes or selecting transport mode (you want to make sure directions are selected to change your icon) before pressing Start to start navigation.
Step 3: Change the icon
Once you have started navigating but before you start driving, tap on the blue dot that represents you and your vehicle. This will pull up the available options. Apart from the usual blue arrow, you can be a red sedan, a yellow SUV or a green truck. Sure, the picks are narrow (there is no Batmobile like in Waze, for example), but if you’re bored of the blue arrow, it’s something.
