How to compress images in Microsoft Word

If you want to reduce the file size of a Microsoft Word document to make it easier to share or save disk space, you will need to compress the images that contain it.

Before we move on, please note that this feature is only available on desktop versions of Office.

Compress images in Word on Windows

On a Windows machine, open the Microsoft Word document that contains the images you want to compress, and then select a photo.

Navigate to the “Image Format” tab. Click “Compress Images” in the “Adjust” group.

In the window that appears, you can select whether you want the compression to be applied only to the image you selected image under “Compression Options.”

If you deselect this option, Word will compress all the images in the document.

Select the resolution you want to use under “Resolution” and then click “OK.”

The image / documents in your document will now be compressed.

Compress images in Word on a Mac

Open the Word document on a Mac that contains the images you want to compress and select a photo. Click “Compress Images” on the “Image Format” tab.

Select the “Image Quality” you want to use from the drop-down list in the dialog box that appears. Then select whether you want to apply the compression to all the images in the document or just the one you selected. You can also choose to delete previously cropped areas with images.

Click “OK” when you have made your selections.
