Amazon Echo ($ 40 on Amazon) Smart speakers and screens can be useful nerve centers for your home ̵1; connect your smart devices and arrange them with . But to get Alexa to collaborate with yours , Bluetooth and other networks can be a hassle – especially when it comes to it on your smart speaker.
I’ve set up dozens if not hundreds of smart devices over the years, and a clear set of directions makes a huge difference. So here’s how to connect Alexa to, well, almost anything.
Your smart screens and speakers should automatically go through the Wi-Fi connection as soon as you turn them on for the first time, but if you dropped the instructions or need to reconnect a device, here it is.
Open the Alexa app, press Devices at the bottom of the screen Echo & Alexa at the top left. Select the device you want to connect, then press the blue Change next to the Wi-Fi network. The app then guides you by connecting to the network.
OK, maybe you want to connect your phone to your smart speaker just to use it as a speaker. Doing it for the first time is quite similar to connecting to Wi-Fi, but it gets easier.
First open the Alexa app, press Devices, then Echo & Alexa. Select your device, then press Bluetooth devices. Echo will search for devices to pair and once you have paired, you can throw music or podcasts of your choice directly to the smart speaker or screen by simply activating Bluetooth on your phone.
(If you want to connect your Echo to other speakers, you can also do so by scrolling down the device screen, past Bluetooth devices and Wi-Fi networks, to Speakers and stereo pairs / subwoofer, which allows you to further customize your sound system.)
If you get a new plug-in light bulb, camera, deadbolt or basically any other smart home gadget, Alexa can probably talk to it too. As long as the device is Alexa compatible, just go to the Alexa app.
When the app is open, press Devicesand then tap the small plus sign in the upper right corner of the app. A menu will slide up from the bottom of the screen and you can add devices by pressing – you guessed it – Add device. From here, select the device you want to add (the app provides a comprehensive list) and follow the specific instructions for your new gadget.
