How to dry a hard drive

If you get rid of an old computer or upgrade your hard drive or SSD to something bigger, faster or just newer, make sure your data is wiped clean from your old hardware. Why? Because if you do not, someone else can easily get the device and look at all your personal files and folders.

Moving or backing up your data is an important first step, but once you've checked everything important is safe and sound on a new device or cloud platform, you need to take a literal or metaphorical hammer to your old device to ensure that Your data is safe. You need to know how to dry a hard drive.

Backup

Before you smash your old device into pieces, you must first do everything that is important with the first thing you should do. All family photos, working documents, financial details, emails ̵

1; whatever information is important to you. You can transfer it to an external device, send it to a cloud storage provider, or clone the entire device. But you do it, make sure you do it before looking at drying in the unit because the last thing you want to do is forget and try to steer your destroyed device back afterwards in an attempt to restore it.

Wipe the drive on Windows

Step 1: Download Eraser

There are a number of programs that do a good job of wiping the hard drive or SSD, but Eraser is our favorite. It's free, intuitive and comprehensive. Because it needs to run in Windows, you cannot wipe the drive you run it from. If you do not have an alternative driver to boot from, you may want to consider an alternative tool such as DBAN.

Download Eraser from the official site and install it as you would any other application.

Step 2: Create task

Open the Eraser program and right-click (or press and hold) in the main window Delete schedule and select New task . Make sure Run manually is selected, and then select Add the data button at the bottom of the window. Change Target type to your driveable unit.

Step 3: Select an erasure method

There are a number of erasure methods to choose from with their own particular advantages. To keep it simple, a P seudorandom Data (1 pass) is sufficient for basic personal data and SSD. If you dry a hard drive or are worried about anything that is recovered from your device, means more passes means less chance of data restoration, so choose one with more passports for greater peace of mind if you prefer

Step 4: Run the task

Even though you can set data to run automatically or at a scheduled time, we have set this manually to give us a chance to double check everything. Make sure that all the data you cannot afford to lose is securely backed up and that you have selected the correct drive and deletion method for this task.

When you are sure everything is ready, right-click on the task in Eraser and select Run Now .

How about Windows recovery?

Windows 10 contains its own recovery options that claim to dry the drivers relatively efficiently. While we still recommend using third-party software like Eraser, the recovery and format method for Windows is still effective if you take a few extra steps. To ensure that your data is not only erased but overwritten and retrieved, follow our Windows Recovery Guide and then complete the data with the data. You can do this by copying movie files, game installations or anything that is particularly large – think hundreds of megabytes or more gigabytes. Copy and paste them over and over again until the drive is full.

Hide a driver on MacOS

Step 1: Run disk space

MacOS built-in hard drive tool is amazing and more than enough to dry the regular hard drive. Open it by starting MacOS Recovery by turning your Mac on and holding Command + R. Continue holding until you see the Apple logo or a globe. The MacOS tool window should open soon after.

Select Disk Utility .

Step 2: Select the disc to be deleted

Select View from the top menu, followed by Show all devices .

Step 3: Select the delete option

Select Delete Remove the ] tab in the top menu. Select the new volume name after it has been deleted. Select the format APFS unless you plan to install a version of MacOS before the High Sierra on the device afterwards (in that case, select Mac OS Extended ). For the schedule, select GUID Partition Map .

If you delete an SSD, proceed to the next step. If you use a hard drive, you can make the deletion a bit more efficient. To do so, select Security Options and use the slider on the following page to change the number of passes that the delete tool makes over the device. More than one is enough, and over three are probably overkill.

Step 4: Delete Data

If you are sure you have backed up all of your important data (it is not possible to go back after this step) select Delete.

Physically destroying the device

An alternative step to the above digital method of removing data or a secondary if you want to do twice as much that your data cannot be restored by anyone, is to physically destroy the device.

If you are the practical type, you can drag the hard disk drives – the actual disks like the zeros and those that make up your data are stored on – and sand the surface or hammer them until they all look dimmed and cratered. Another option is to take a rare earth magnet as a neodymium magnet and run it over the disk plate. It will deform it and make some data about the unreadable.

You can also drill holes in the unit if you do not want to worry about removing the cover.

There are companies that will professionally iron out for you while you watch as well. Imagine "it will be mixed", but with a much larger mixer.
