Like Netflix and other streaming platforms, Disney + targets multilingual and hearing-impaired customers by offering subtitles for their movies and TV shows. If you want to enable, disable or customize the subtitles on Disney +, here’s what you need to do.
Enable or disable subtitles on Disney +
Subtitles are available for all major Disney + TV shows and movies. You can enable or disable them during playback on Disney + in your browser, in the Disney + mobile app, or on other platforms such as Apple TV.
While the instructions will vary slightly, the Disney + experience is very similar on almost all platforms, from game consoles to smart TVs. If your own platform is not included, you should find that the steps below work in a similar way.
In your browser
To enable or disable subtitles from the Disney + website, you must first start playing something from Disney + in your browser.
Hover the mouse pointer over the movie or TV series in your browser to display the playback controls. In the upper right corner, click on the “Language controls”; button (shaped like a keyboard).
This will bring up the option for audio and subtitles for the played content. Subtitles are disabled by default.
To activate them, scroll through and select one of the available languages in the “Subtitles” category. Your video will start showing the subtitles in your chosen language immediately.
To disable subtitles, repeat the steps above and select “Off” from the “Subtitles” list instead. This will remove them from your video.
On iPhone, iPad or Android devices
If you use a mobile device running Android or have an iPhone or iPad, you will find the play screen similar to the one used on the Disney + website.
To enable or disable subtitles, start playing a video and then tap the “Language Controls” icon that resembles a keyboard in the upper right corner. Select the subtitle language you want to activate from the “Subtitles” category (for example “Deutsch” for German).
If you already have subtitles enabled, select “Off” instead.
On other platforms
Other platforms will have different interfaces, but you will have access to the subtitle menu when playing Disney + movies and TV shows.
Enabling Disney + subtitles on Xbox One or PlayStation 4, for example, follows a similar pattern to the methods above by opening the language control icon and selecting an available language.
However, if you swipe down with the remote control on an Apple TV, you will have access to the menu, where you can enable or disable subtitles from the “Subtitles” tab.
How to customize subtitles on Disney +
It is possible to customize the subtitles displayed on Disney + videos, so that you can change the font, color and overall design of subtitles.
However, this is only possible if you play Disney + content in your browser. At the time of writing, you can not customize the subtitles displayed in the Disney + mobile app or in the Disney + app on other platforms.
To do this, start playing a movie or TV show on the Disney + website. Hold the mouse pointer over the video content during playback to display the playback controls, then select the “Language controls” icon in the upper right corner (shaped like a keyboard).
This will address the option for audio and subtitles.
To customize your subtitles, click on the “Settings” icon on the right side.
This opens the “Subtitle style” menu. From here you can select a new font from the “Font” drop-down menu.
All changes you make can be previewed at the top of the menu.
You can also set the font color, size, and opacity settings from the specified options.
Additional changes, including the ability to set a font frame, background color and opacity, and window color and opacity are also available.
Change these settings to suit your own preferences.
To restore your subtitles to the default Disney + style, click the “Reset to Default” button at the bottom of the menu.
All changes you make to your subtitles are applied automatically.
