Creating a routine can be the key to getting a good night’s sleep. The Google Clock app makes it easy with a set of “Bedtime” tools. We’ll show you how to set them up and capture some Zs.
The bedtime tools are available in the Google Clock app, which comes standard on many Android phones. The Clock app also has a lag time on phones with Google̵7;s suite for digital well-being. We also help you set it up!
How to set a bedtime schedule
You can access your bedding settings through the Google Clock app. Download the app from the Google Play Store if it’s not already on your Android device.
Open the app and then tap “Bedding” in the lower toolbar.
Click “Get Started.”
First we create an alarm alarm (press “Skip” if you do not want to set one). Press minus (-) and plus (+) to select time. Touch the days of the week you want to use the alarm.
Under the time and date options, you can also tap the checkbox next to the “Sunrise Alarm” option to enable it. This setting mimics the sun by slowly illuminating the phone screen before the alarm sounds.
Then click on “Sound” to select what you want for your alarm.
The first time you open the “Sound” settings, you will be greeted with a popup containing all the apps you can use to set a music alarm. Click “Reject” to proceed to the other options.
Scroll through the list of sounds and tap the one you want to set as the alarm. Then click the back arrow to return to the previous screen.
Then select the check box next to the “Vibrate” option if you also want your phone to vibrate when the alarm sounds.
To set up a routine with Google Assistant, press the plus sign (+) to open the assistant settings. If not, press “Next.”

You can now set a bedtime schedule. Use the minus (-) and plus (+) characters to adjust the time you want your device to be silent, and then tap the days of the week you want this to happen.
To receive a reminder to go to bed, click on “Reminder message” and select a time.
If your device includes Google’s digital wellness suite, there’s another option called “Bedtime Mode” (more on that later). For now, press “Done” to get to the “Bedtime” overview screen.
The “Bedtime” overview screen shows a number of additional tools, including “Listen to sleep sounds” and “See your upcoming events.” If your device has the Digital Wellbeing Suite, you also have the “View Recent Bedtime Activity” option.
Click “Listen to sleep sounds” if you want the app to play soothing music or sounds while you fall asleep. Click “Select a sound” to get started.
You will see some built-in sounds to choose from, as well as all connected music apps. Click the back arrow after making a selection.
Next, if you want to make sure your alarm always goes off before any scheduled events, you can give the Clock app access to your calendar; press “Continue” to set it.
When asked if you want to allow the Clock app to access your calendar, tap “Allow.”
Your bedside is now ready!
Use bedtime mode with digital well-being
Digital Wellbeing is Google’s suite of tools designed to help you use your device responsibly. Part of its mission is to create better habits before going to bed.

If you have a Google Pixel phone or a fairly new Android device, there is a good chance that you have Digital Wellbeing. An easy way to control is to swipe down (once or twice, depending on the manufacturer’s handset) from the top of the screen. Tap the gear icon to open the “Settings” menu, then look for “Digital Wellness.”
To use the extra functions for bedtime mode in Digital Wellbeing, start by following the steps we covered above to create a bedtime schedule. Then tap on the time you set for bedtime on the overview screen “Bedtime”.
Press “Bedtime Mode.”
Here’s a new set of tools to help you stay away from your phone at bedtime.
As we have already set up a bedtime schedule, “Bedtime Mode” will be turned on and off at these times. You can also choose to have it activated when your device is charging within that time frame.
At the bottom you can turn on the “Do not disturb” option to block notifications when the mode is active.
Turn on the “Grayscale” option to activate the display in black and white when the mode is active. This is meant to make your phone less appealing.
When you have finished adjusting these settings, tap the back arrow at the top to return to the previous screen.
Slide down from the top of the bed schedule settings.
Another tool Digital Wellbeing adds to “Bedtime” settings is “View Recent Bedtime Activity.” This will help you track how you use your phone at bedtime. Click “Continue” to set up this tool.
Digital Wellbeing will request access to your app usage and sensor data. It uses motion and light detection during bedtime to appreciate when using your phone in bed.
Turn on the “Motion and light detection during your scheduled bedtime” option, then press “Allow.”
That’s all! Now you will see your bedtime activity on the overview screen “Bed walking”.
