Movies are horrible today, right? Only superhero movies and sequels? Yes No. It has never been easier to find good movies to watch, both in the cinema or at home. Let's dig in.
Find amazing new movies in the cinema
A movie theater is the best place to watch movies: the big screen, fresh popcorn and an attentive audience. This is a hill I will die on.
The problem is that many good movies only show a week or two, and if you miss them you miss them. Here's how to stay on the latest releases.
Check out less, Arthouse Cinemas
If you go to a big multiplex, almost all screens will play the latest big budget Hollywood movie. I recognize that point. However, they are not the only places that show films. Arthouse and small cinemas tend to play smaller films that are less widespread. One of this year's sleeping hits, Free Solo was actually released in September, last year. It just ran into smaller cinemas. It is only when it wins an Oscar that broke in public awareness.
Many other films that later continue to become cult classics or succeed on streaming platforms also begin in this way. The best thing is to keep track of the lists in your nearest small cinema. Subscribe to the newsletter if they have one. If you see a director or actor you like, the Google movie and see if it looks good. Here's how to find many of the movies I watch.
Watch Movie Reviews
Movie critics often get a bad rap because their views may counteract what "fans" think. Just look at all the drama about major releases like Captain Marvel Suicide Squad Aquaman and The Last Jedi . And although it is true that great exciting movies that make it difficult with the critics can be fun to watch, critics often have a score: Captain Marvel is one of Marvel's better new offers, Suicide Squad and Aquaman are absolute mess and The Last Jedi was a welcome change for Star Wars .
Even if you disagree with the critics of the big films, odds are you likely to stick with them much more when it comes to smaller tabs where you have no emotional investment. Almost everyone adored Get Out and A quiet place .
Find a movie publication or even a critic whose taste broadly extends with your and keep track of what they are rating highly. Especially with smaller films, critics will see previews so the reviews will be out in time for you to see them and then capture the movie when it shows. You should also keep track of aggregates such as Rotten Tomatoes and Meta Criticism to see which smaller films generate little buzz.
Find good movies to watch at home
Finding good movies to watch at the theater takes some work because you have such a short time frame to catch them. Finding good movies to watch at home, on the other hand, is difficult because you have virtually unlimited choices over Netflix, Amazon, Amazon Prime, iTunes and the rest of the internet. It is possible though.
Grab every best list you can
One of my favorite times of the year is when the best lists start to drop. They are always good to look through to see what you have missed, from big budget movies you thought were misleading to the smaller things you didn't even hear when it was released. When I'm looking for a movie to watch, I usually just Google "Best Comedy 2016," "Best Thriller 2010", or whatever genre I want to watch and a random year. You either get a reminder of a movie that you would like to rethink or find something new that you haven't seen.
You can also do the same with price list. Choose a random year and check out the best photo or best Whatever nominee and see if anything takes your imagination.
Use Recommendation Sites
I'm not a big fan of the recommendation algorithms on Netflix and Amazon Prime. They seem to either drive me towards their exclusive shows or the same ten major budget films that have just been launched on streaming. Very rarely do they recommend something particularly exciting or invisible.
To cut through the cruft I am a big fan of two recommendations: Find a movie and a good movie to watch.
Finding a movie is the more algorithmic and helps you find a movie that matches your current mood, like a movie that makes you a little reflective of the human condition that … Coach Carter or Brazil .
A good movie to watch uses human curation to the surface "highly rated but little known" films. I love many of their choices, but the best feature is that you can filter where the movies are available to stream. You can also filter for Netflix country.
When you infinitely browse through Netflix, you're looking for something! -As you want to watch, find a movie or a good movie to watch is where to turn.
Sometimes the best way to find a good movie is to go for something you are not sure about. If that is good, you win and broaden your taste. If it's bad, bad movies can be fun in their own way, and you learn what you don't like, which can be just as useful. Plus, if it's really bad, you can always turn it off.
If someone you know – or a critic you respect – recommends something that is a bit out there and you are not sure you fit your taste, so look at it. Sometimes the best way to find a movie is to make the decision completely out of your hands.
