Samsung’s stock Galaxy Themes system leaves a lot to be desired with its restrictive and expensive theme packages. Back in the day, the gold standard for Android themes was CyanogenMod Theme Engine. And even if it no longer exists, a successor has emerged to fill the void.
Hex Installer applies Substratrum-like themes with one app. It works with all One UI versions, so Samsung smartphones as old as the Galaxy S8 can take advantage of it.
With Hex Installer, you can change the look of your Samsung device in a way that was previously only possible with root. It does not even require ADB commands – all this power is possible via standard apps. Whether you prefer the TouchWiz look or want a more layered Android design, the Hex Installer has you covered and more.
- Samsung phone running Android 9 (One UI 1.0) or higher
Step 1: Install Hex Installer
The Hex Installer app is available in the Play Store. The official price is $ 1.99, but at the time of writing, the developer is running a 50% discount on sales. Do not let its early access status worry you. During our tests, we thought it was stable without any problems.
Step 2: Use default theme
Hex Installer works by changing available themes in Galaxy themes. If this is your first time using the app, you must first use the default theme.
Open Settings and select “Themes.” Open the hamburger menu in the upper left corner and select “My Stuff.” Make sure you see a white check mark in “Standard”. If not, select it to select “Apply”.
Step 3: Customize your theme
Open the Hex Installer and follow the on-screen instructions, including the necessary permissions. When you reach the main page, you can start customizing your theme. The top of the page shows you a direct look at the changes you have made, including how different parts of the UI will appear.
- UI mode: Plugins, which are the basis of your themes. Here you will find such based on stock Android and TouchWiz. Select “Find more plugins on Google Play” to add new plugins (some have a cost for them).
- Color: Adjust the colors in different parts of the user interface, including quick settings, text and apps.
- Apps: Select apps you want to use the theme on. By default, all supported apps are selected.
- Custom fonts: Change the text of the style. This feature does not work on Android 10 or later.
- settings: Other changes such as changing status bar symbols, adjusting the transparency of quick setting icons and more.
Step 4: Build your theme
When you have finished customizing, select “Build and Install.” You will be redirected to Galaxy Themes and asked to download High Contrast Theme: Sky Black. Once downloaded, do not turn on.
Instead, select the back button to return to the Hex Installer and then press “Build and Install” again. Hex Installer will now apply the modification to High Contrast Theme. A series of popups prompts you to uninstall or uninstall an aspect of the theme. Select “Yes” on each one, and eventually you will go to the Galaxy Themes homepage.
Step 5: Use your Hex theme
If this is your first time installing a Hex Installer theme, restart your phone now. Restarting solves a problem where the icons in the status bar are not used. Once your phone has restarted, go back to Galaxy themes and select High_contrast_theme_II and select “Apply”. When it has finished loading, you will see your new theme.
Step 6: Apply more themes in the future
After the first time, you no longer need to switch to Standard theme. Instead, you only need to switch to Standard after building the new theme, but before switching back to High_contrast_theme_II to apply your changes. Also, you do not need to restart your phone before using future themes.
