Living in an apartment I long for a backyard where I can have sprawling plant beds, fruit trees and giant flower pots. I do not need to put these dreams entirely.
With a container yard, I can take advantage of the small space that I have to grow fruit, vegetables and herbs. Whether you have a few feet of balcony space or several inches on your counter, you can also create a container garden.
There are great benefits of container craft: Containers require less water, you can move plants around to meet their sunlight needs, and you can control pests and avoid terrestrial problems like fungi and bacteria. They are also flexible, allowing you to add plants and rearrange pots as you like.
Sunlight is crucial
Before you buy plants, find out the lighting conditions you have. Does your balcony, patio or windowsill have several hours of sunshine every day?
Most fruits and vegetables need at least 6 hours of sunlight to produce. Leaf vegetables, root plants (such as scallions or radishes) and herbs can escape by 3 to 4 hours.
What grows well in a container garden?
Now is the time to consider how much space you have for your container garden. Some plants require large pots and plenty of room to grow, while others can be limited to a worktop.
If you have a balcony, patio or other outdoor space
Here you are only limited by how much room you have. Choose plants that grow well in your hardness zone and you will be rewarded with fresh fruits and vegetables.
Here is what grows best outdoors:
- Large and long plants such as tomatoes, peppers, melons and squash.
- Plants that spread, such as strawberries, beans and cucumbers.
- Small fruit trees, including apple, lemon or even avocado.
If you only have indoor space or some inch worktop
Even without outdoor space, you can still grow a home garden successfully. Many plants do OK inside, provided they have access to the right amount of light. ]
More gardening containers
If you need to move your plants a lot to take into account the sun, use plastic pots. They keep better moisture than terracotta pots, are much lighter and will not crack easily.
You can start your garden from seeds, but it is easier to buy already established plants. This is especially true for all types of fruit trees, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers and basil.
Large plants, including tomatoes, cucumbers and squash will need large pots to grow. Some vegetables, such as tomatoes and green beans, need trellises or cages to help support them as they grow.
With a little space, some containers and the right plants, you have everything you need to create a mini farmhouse at home.
