When you open the Windows 10 Start menu, you normally see an alphabetical list of apps installed on your system. If you want a smaller, nicer Start menu, it is possible to hide the app list on the left. Here’s how.
Here is an example of what a typical app list in the Start menu usually looks like (although yours will vary depending on how you have configured your computer). We have marked the app list in red.
If you want to disable the app list, we need to make a small change to the Windows settings.
Open “Settings” by clicking on the “Start” menu and selecting the “Gear” icon or by pressing Windows + I.
Click “Customization” in the main settings menu.
Click “Start” in the Customization sidebar.
In the start menu settings, look for the switch labeled “Show app list in the start menu.” Click the power switch to turn it off.
The next time you open the Start menu, you will see a much smaller menu without the app list. But it’s not gone forever! To see the app list again, click the “All Apps” button in the sidebar.
Then the app list opens and you see a complete alphabetical list of your installed apps, but the Start menu remains elegant and small.
To switch back to the previous view at any time, click the “Pinned Tiles” button just above the “All Apps” button in the Start menu.
If you want to make your Start menu even smaller, you can quickly resize it by clicking on the corners and dragging with the mouse or touchpad. Have fun customizing your machine!
