Loss-free quality is not for everyone. If you can not distinguish between lossless sound and other formats, you probably need but do not need it. But if you’re a musician sharing ideas with bandmates or a journalist interviewing people for a video, you may want the best possible quality, which is what Lossless offers. And you may not know it, but the Voice Memos app on your iPhone supports it.
When it comes to audio files, there are lossless and lossless. When compressed, lost file formats, such as MP3 and AAC, you delete specific data from the recording that human ears cannot hear. This makes the files easier to store and share because they are smaller, but that deleted data is lost forever.
On the other hand, audio files intelligently compress, like FLAC and Apple Lossless (ALAC), just like ZIP information, so no data is lost. So a file would be as high quality as a completely uncompressed raw version. It is much larger than a loss file, but if you want the highest quality sound, there is nothing better than lossless.
By default, voice memos play in iOS 12 and later recorded compressed audio, but you can switch to lossless high quality with just a few taps. Your audio files will be significantly larger, but if you use iCloud and have enough space, switching to lossless is a no-brainer.
You will not find the option directly in voice memos. Instead, open the Settings app, click on “Voice memo” and then select the “Sound quality” option under Voice Memo Settings. By default, the “Compressed” option is enabled. Click “Lossless” to upgrade your sound quality.
Below you can see two audio recordings of the same sound, both exactly one minute long. As you can see, the lossless file is significantly larger at almost three megabytes (right screenshot), compared to the lossless file which is just over 500 kilobytes (left screenshot).
Now you can set voice memos on lossless recordings and still come out with bad sound tracks. When recording, it is recommended that you move your iPhone’s microphone at a suitable distance from the subject to a maximum level of between -3 and zero decibels (dB). It’s your sweet spot.
