How to install Google Assistant on Samsung Galaxy Smartwatches

Samsung Galaxy smartwatches are a good option for people with Android phones, but they do not have Google Assistant, which can be a deal-breaker. How to get Google Assistant up and running on your Samsung laptop.

7;s a competent companion, you may prefer Google Assistant. Thanks to an app called “GAssist”, it is possible to use the assistant on most Samsung watches. The process is a bit long but you only have to do it once.

GAssist is compatible with Samsung Galaxy watches running Tizen 4.0+. You can check which version your device is running by going to Settings> About clock> Software> Tizen version of the clock.

Install GAssist Watch and Phone Apps

Open the Galaxy Wearable app on your Android smartphone, navigate to the Galaxy Store, and then search for “GAssist.”

Select “GAssist.Net” by developer Kamil Kierski, then press “Install.”

Click “Accept and Download” in the pop-up window.

Navigate to the Google Play Store on your Android smartphone. Search for “GAssist” and then select “GAssist.Net Companion” by cybernetic87.

Download the app by pressing “Install.”

Once both apps are installed, you will need to obtain a Google Assistant “key” from the Google Cloud Platform.

Get a “Key” for Google Assistant

Open a web browser on your computer and go to the Google Cloud Platform. Accept the terms of use if prompted and then click “Select a project” at the top.

Click “New project” in the popup window.

Give the project a name and then click “Create.”

Click the hamburger menu at the top left to open the sidebar, then select “APIs and Services.”

Click on the project you just created.

Click “Enable APIs and Services” at the top.

Type “Google Assistant” in the search field.

The results are displayed as you type. Click on the “Google Assistant API” option.

Click “Create References.” On the next page.

In “Which API are you using?” in the drop-down menu, select “Google Assistant API.”

Click “Where will you call the API from?” in the drop-down menu, then select Android.

Select “User data” under “What data will you have access to?” Then click on “What references do I need?”

Click “Set Consent Screen” in the pop-up window. This may open a new tab in your browser.

If the next screen prompts you to select a “user type”, select the one that matches your usage case and then click “Create.”

Type a name in the “Program Name” text box, then click “Save” at the bottom of the page.

If you are not automatically redirected, select the “Certificate” tab in the sidebar and then click “Create References” at the top.

Select “OAuth Client ID” from the list.

In the “Application Type” drop-down menu, click “Other” or “TVs and Limited Input Devices.” Enter a name or use the default value and then click “Create.”

Go back to the “Certificates” tab and click on the download icon next to “OAuth Client ID” that you just created.

Click on the download icon.

Now you need to move the downloaded JSON file to your Android smartphone. Connect your phone to your computer to access its internal storage.

Open the file manager (or Finder on Mac) and select your smartphone. Copy the downloaded JSON file to the “Download” folder on your smartphone and rename it to “secrets.json.”

Complete the installation on your phone

Then open the GAssist app on your smartphone and tap “Browse.”

Navigate to the “Download” folder and select “secrets.json.”

You should see “The file has been loaded successfully;” press “Next.”

Select “Authenticate” to give GAssist access to your Google Account.

Select the account you use with Google Assistant.

Choose your Google Account.

Tap “Allow” to give GAssist permission to use Google Assistant in your account.

Confirm on the next screen by pressing “Allow” again.

Copy the verification code with the on-screen button and then return to the GAssist app.

Touch the layered square icon to copy the authentication code.

Paste the code in the text box, then press “OK.”

Use Google Assistant on your Samsung Watch

Open the GAssist app on your Samsung Galaxy smartwatch and let GAssist access the microphone and storage.

Give GAssist access to storage and the microphone on your watch.

Press “Listen” to talk to Google Assistant and it will respond to your command. If your laptop has a speaker, you will hear the answer aloud. Press “Stop” to end the answer.

To make Google Assistant easy to launch, we recommend that you double-tap it on the home key shortcut.

To do so, go to Settings> Double-tap Home Button> GAssistNet on your Samsung Galaxy Watch.
