How to Jailbreak iOS 12.3 to iOS 13.2.2 on Your iPhone Using Checkra1n «iOS & iPhone :: Gadget Hacks

The infamous Checkm8 bootrom exploit first shown by axi0mX has finally left room for the Checkra1n utility which aims to provide a permanent jailbreak solution for modders running on iOS 13 and later. The latest jailbreak method covers devices ranging from iPhone 5 s all the way to iPhone X.

The process is quite simple, but you need a macOS computer. Windows and Linux support should come soon. You should also know that Checkra1n is semi-untethered which means you have to enable jailbreak again with the same step below each time your device is shut down or restarted. Finally, the tool only provides support for Cydia, so no luck for Sileo lovers out there.

Requirements

  • Mac
  • Lightning cable
  • iPhone with A7, A8, A9 or A1
    0 processor

Supported iPhone models

  • iPhone X (iOS 12.3- 13.2.2 full)
  • iPhone 8 / Plus (iOS 12.3–13.2.2 full)
  • iPhone 7 / Plus (iOS 12.3–13.2.2 full) [19659006] iPhone 6 S / Plus (iOS 12.3–13.2.2 full) [19659006] iPhone SE (iOS 12.3–13.2.2 full) [19659006] iPhone 5 S (not yet supported)

Step 1: Install Checkra1n on your Mac

You must first install the Checkra1n jailbreak utility on your Mac. To ensure that the app will work properly, disable FileVault by going to System Settings -> Security & Privacy . If the feature is enabled, click the FileVault tab, click the lock icon in the bottom left, and enter your password, and then click "Turn off FileVault."

Now, go to checkra.in and click on "Download beta now", then select "Download for macOS." If prompted, be sure to click "Keep" in the browser's download bar. Once the file has been downloaded, double-click it to launch it, then drag the "checkra1n" icon and drop it in the "Applications" folder to install the app.

Open the Finder and go to the Applications folder. Locate checkra1n in the list. Since it comes from an "unidentified developer", the app won't run until you do a little trick.

Hold down the control (^) on the keyboard, then left-click the checkra1n app. Select "Open" from the pop-up menu that appears, and then click "Open" in the prompt. From now on, you will be able to open the app normally.

Step 2: Remove iOS update from storage (if needed) [19659018] Once you have Checkra1n configured on your computer, go to your iPhone and remove any iOS software updates you may have saved, as they will interfere with jailbreak and prevent it from successfully running. Go to the following menu:

Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage

On the "iPhone Storage" page, look for all files named "iOS 13.x.x." If you find one, click it and then click "Delete Update" and follow the instructions to confirm the deletion.

Step 3: Connect Your iPhone & Run Checkra1n

When Checkra1n is open, connect your iPhone to your Mac with either a USB to Lightning cable or a USB-C to Lightning cable and wait for the tool detects your device. Once there, your iPhone model, along with the current iOS version and ECID, will be displayed. Go ahead and click "Start" when you're ready to start jailbreaking.

When you press "Start", you are immediately prompted to start your iPhone in DFU mode. But don't touch your phone yet – wait a moment until Checkra1n restarts your device to recovery mode before moving forward.

Step 4: Enter DFU mode and run Jailbreak

When you start iPhone in recovery mode, it is now ready for you to perform the steps to go to DFU mode. Checkra1n guides you through the steps via onscreen instructions, but you can enter DFU on your own if you are familiar with the steps. If you want to learn more about DFU mode on iPhone X and iPhone 8, feel free to check out the link below.

In addition, you can also follow the short instructions below that correspond to your device if you want to familiarize yourself with the steps to enter DFU mode . As mentioned above, you do not need to follow Checkra1in's on-screen guide – the app automatically knows when your device enters DFU and proceeds with the process.

iPhone X, 8 or 8 Plus:

  1. Quickly press the Volume Up button.
  2. Quick press of the Volume Down button.
  3. Press and hold the side button until the screen turns black.
  4. Release the side button when the screen is black and then. ..
  5. Press and hold both the side and volume down buttons for 5 seconds.
  6. After 5 seconds, release the side button without releasing the Volume down button.
  7. Continue holding down the Volume Down button for at least 5 seconds.

iPhone 7 or 7 Plus:

  1. Press and hold both Volume Down and Sleep / Wake buttons until the screen turns black.
  2. Press and hold the Sleep / Wake button for three seconds.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Down button without releasing the Sleep / Wake button.
  4. Continue holding both buttons for 10 seconds, then just release the Sleep / Wake button.
  5. Continue to hold down the Volume key for at least 5 seconds.

iPhone 6 S or below:

  1. Press and hold both the Sleep / Wake and Home buttons until the screen turns black.
  2. Press and hold the Sleep / Wake button for three seconds.
  3. Press and hold the Home button without releasing the Sleep / Wake button.
  4. Continue to hold both buttons for 10 seconds and then just release the Sleep / Wake button.
  5. Keep holding the Home button for at least 5 seconds.

When you enter DFU mode, Checkra1n automatically continues to jailbreak your device. While doing so, your iPhone will flash a Checkra1n logo card and then boot up normally, so sit back and wait for the process to complete.

Important Notes

As mentioned earlier, Checkra1n is a semi-bound jailbreak, which means you have to re-enable jailbreak shown in step 3 on down every time your iPhone turns off or restarts. Once done, all tweaks and mods that you have enabled will work automatically again.

It is also worth noting that unlike previous jailbreak methods, Checkra1n works much more consistently on different devices. We tested the jailbreak tool on an iPad Mini 4, iPad 6 and iPhone 8 – all on iOS 13.2.2 – and found that Checkra1n successfully modified all devices in just one attempt.

Finally, it is important to mention that Checkra1n only supports Cydia at the moment, with no firm word on whether it will support Sileo in the future. So if you have an imprisoned iPhone and prefer Sileo, we recommend that you update to iOS 13. currently.
