How to quickly switch between virtual desktops on Windows 10

Virtual desktops are a convenient way to juggle multiple workspaces in Windows 10. There are several ways to quickly switch between virtual desktops, including several lesser-known keyboard shortcuts – we’ll cover them all below.

Keyboard shortcuts for switching between virtual desktops

To quickly switch between virtual desktops in Windows 1

0 with a keyboard shortcut, press Windows + Ctrl + left arrow to switch to a desktop with a lower number or Windows + Ctrl + right arrow for a higher number. If there is a virtual desktop in the “direction” you specify with the arrow keys, the workspace switches directly to it.

To quickly see the virtual machines you have available, press Windows + Tab. Then you will see a screen called “Task View”, which shows available virtual desktops with thumbnails of each.

To use the keyboard to switch between virtual desktops on this screen, press Tab until one of the thumbnails in the top row is highlighted. Then navigate between them by pressing the arrow keys followed by Enter. The activity view closes and you see the desktop you selected.

To add a new virtual desktop via the keyboard, press Windows + Ctrl + D or just press Windows + Tab to open Task View again. Select “New Desktop” using the Tab and arrow keys, then press Enter.

A new virtual desktop is displayed. When you have finished managing your desktops, select one and press Enter or just press Escape to return to the desktop.

Use the taskbar to switch between virtual desktops

To quickly switch between virtual desktops via the taskbar, click the Task View button or press Windows + Tab.

Click the Task View button in Windows 10 to switch to another virtual desktop.

Then click or tap the desktop you want to switch to.

If you do not see the Task View button on the taskbar, right-click on the taskbar and then click “Show Task View Button”; it should now have a tick next to it.

Once visible, you can at any time click on “Task View” to manage your virtual desktops, which will definitely come in handy!
