How to reduce background noise and echoes for higher quality voice memos in iOS 14 «iOS & iPhone :: Gadget hack

Your iPhone’s voice memory app is a simple tool for quickly recording lectures at school, jam sessions in the studio or just oral notes for yourself. Although it is an uncomplicated app, there are several hidden features that you may not know about that can improve the quality of your recordings.

One feature that may be news to your ears is the ability to record in lossless sound quality. Another allows you to use an external microphone to get higher quality stereo recordings. Without these, however, there is an even simpler setting that you can switch to to enhance your saved audio files in voice memos.

Apple introduced an “Enhanced Recording”

; feature in iOS 14 for voice memos, which uses machine learning to reduce background noise and echoes and make recording clearer and easier to listen to. If you are someone who has trouble getting excellent audio recordings from your iPhone, this is a mechanism that you should definitely try.

In voicemails, tap an existing recording to expand your options. In the extended playback controls, tap the ellipse icon (•••) on the left, which shows the action sheet. Select “Edit recording” from the list.

Here you can cut your recording, but you can also enhance it with a single touch. At the top left of the editor you will see a magic wand button, which is the Enhance Recording feature. Touch that icon and the background of the button will turn blue to announce that it is activated.

Now click the play button to listen to the recording. As mentioned earlier, your iPhone will do its best to minimize background noise and other interference, such as echoes. To compare the sound quality, disable the enhanced recording and play the file without it.

Comparing before and after is important because Enhanced recording does not always “enhance” the sound in every audio file; it may make some audio recordings worse. Once you have selected the best version, with or without magic wand selected, press “Done” to save the changes.

If you change the audio recording, you can always go back to the voice memo editor and turn off Enhance recording for the file. Just as edits in the Photos app are not forever, edits in voice memos can be restored.
