How to run Microsoft Office on Chromebook

One of the beautiful things about Chromebooks is that they are basically cloud-based. This means that you do not have to fill in the hard disk with file after file. Instead, you can do almost anything through Google Drive.

As good as that, you may not want to do everything in the device. Most of us are used to Microsoft Office for things like Word documents or Excel spreadsheets. Fortunately, if you are in that boat and still want a Chromebook, you can get the best of both worlds.

You cannot install Windows or Mac desktop versions of Office 365 or Office 2016 on a Chromebook, but you still have options for running Microsoft Office on the Chromebook.

Depending on the software you run or have access to on the Chromebook, you can use Office in a limited capacity. Basically, your Chromebook runs the same version of Office apps as Android tablets.

Microsoft Office for Chromebook: Google Play Store

The easiest way to download Microsoft Office on Chromebook is to download Office apps available for Android and Chromebooks .

If you use the Google Play Store, this is the option you want. You are ready to download and use the Office applications you want to use on your Chromebook.

Follow these simple steps:

  • Open the Google Play Store.
  • Search for the Office program you want to download and select it.
  • Click Install.
  • When the app is complete download, open the Chrome launcher to open the app.
  • Log in to your Microsoft account or Office 365 subscription account.

Microsoft Office for Chromebook: Office Online

If your Chromebook only has access to the Chrome Web Store, you can unfortunately not download the various office apps.

However, you are not happy. You can still download Office Online. With the online version you can work with, edit and share Office files directly in your browser. You must be connected to the Internet to use Microsoft Office on the Chromebook, which may not be ideal, but that means you have an alternative to Drive.

You do not have access to all the features that you can have on a computer or Mac, but your Chromebook is no different than being one of them.

This allows you to work on the same Office files on different devices, which can help you avoid the extra step of converting the file from Drive for use later.

Chromebooks can be clearly linked to Google's ecosystem, but that doesn't mean you have to give up all control and bow to the gods of Google. You can still use your favorite apps like Office.
