Most of us use emoji on our iPhone, but until recently it has been difficult to find the right one. Fortunately, starting with iOS 14, you can now search for emoji directly within the Emoji keyboard in any app on an iPhone. Here’s how.
First open the app you want to enter an emoji in. Tap any text entry area and when the on-screen keyboard appears, press the emoji keyboard button.
(If you do not see the emoji button on the on-screen keyboard, it means the emoji keyboard has been disabled in Settings. To get it back, navigate to Settings> General> Keyboard> Keyboard. Press “Add New Keyboard.” Select “Emoji. “)
When the emoji keyboard appears, press the “Search emoji” text entry area. If you do not see the “Search emoji” area, you must first update your iPhone to iOS 14 or later.

Enter a word that describes the emoji you are looking for, and potential matches will appear horizontally in an area just below the search box. And you can also search by category. For example, if you type “fire”, flam emoji, a fireball, an electric truck and more will appear.
If you enter a word with a large number of potential matches (for example, “animals” in this example), you can scroll through them by sliding your finger left or right along the search results field. As you swipe, more emoji will be revealed.
When you find the emoji you want to use, tap it and it will be inserted into the app you are using.
At the time of writing, this technology only works on the iPhone, but the emoji search bar may come to the iPad soon in a future update. At the moment, if you want to search for emoji on your iPad, you have to use the older “predictive text” technology.
