Here at How-To Geek, we find that the iOS Live Wallpaper feature is pretty neat, even if it is underutilized. If you don't want to spend time creating your own good Live Wallpaper, one of the next best options is to use a GIF.
As with most things on iPhone, there is an app for it. In this case, it is GIPHY, one of the best GIF apps on iOS. Download it and let's get started.
Open GIPHY and look for a GIF you like. There are a few things to consider when looking:
- Your iPhone wallpaper is vertical. If you do not want a very small or very trimmed GIF, you should look for something that is also vertical.
- Live Wallpapers are stationary most of the time. You should choose something where the snapshot looks good.
- GIF generally has low image quality. It is worth spending some time to find something that is of high quality. It will look much better.
After a bit of searching, I found this amazing Flanders GIF.
Once you have found your GIF, open it and press the three small dots in the lower right corner. Then select "Convert to Live Photo."
You have two options: Save as Live Photo (Full Screen) and Save as Live Photo.
Full Screen crops GIF, so it takes up your entire iPhone screen while Fit to Screen adds black bars. Select the one you want, and Live Photo will be saved in your camera roll. I suggest you try both and see which one works better for you.
Now is the time to set your background image. Go to Settings> Background> Select New Background.
Select "Live Photos" and then the live photo you just saved. Place the GIF how you want it, and then press "Set." You can choose whether you want it to be on the lock screen, home screen or both.
And with that done, you have a stupid, sexy new GIF as your background.
Setting up your favorite GIF as wallpaper is a great way to add some personality to what is the same phone that millions of other people use. You can even make and set up your own toxins.
