Sleep tracking is available on all Apple Watches Series 3 and later. It is an automatic feature that tracks data when you go to bed while wearing the smartwatch, but you have to set it up. How to set up sleep tracking on your Apple Watch.
Although you can set up sleep tracking on your Apple Watch, it̵7;s much easier to do on your iPhone. First check that your iPhone has iOS 14 or higher and that your Apple Watch is running watchOS 7 or higher. If not, the sleep tracking settings will not be available.
To get started, tap and open the “Health” app on your iPhone. You can swipe down on the home screen and then use Spotlight Search to find it when needed.
Then tap the “Browse” tab, then tap “Hibernate.”
You can now schedule your bedtime routine. Having a fixed schedule helps your Apple Watch start monitoring sleep activity. It also sets an automatic alarm to wake you up in the morning.
Press “Full schedule and options.”
Touch “Set up your first schedule” in the “Entire schedule” section.
Choose which days of the week you want to use the schedule. Then set your “Bedtime” and “Wake Up” times.
If you want to fine-tune the alarm, you can do so at the bottom. When you are done, tap “Add” at the top right.
You can add as many schedules as you want – just press “Add schedule for other days” to set more. Most have a schedule for weekdays and another for weekends.
When you have finished customizing your schedules, scroll down and set the “Sleep Goal”, “Wind Down” and “Wind Down Shortcuts” settings. Continue by pressing “Options”.
You can then activate all the settings you want in the “Sleep” menu. You will probably turn on both the “Turn on automatically” and “Track time in bed with iPhone” options.
Once you have done this, “Do Not Disturb” will be activated automatically when your iPhone is in sleep mode. This turns off all incoming notifications when you go to sleep.
Finally, scroll down and tap “Manage Hibernation in the Apple Watch App.”
Activate all the settings you want. Again, you want to turn on the “Turn on automatically” and “Track sleep with Apple Watch” options.
This activates “Do Not Disturb” on your watch and prevents the screen from turning on while you sleep.
That’s all! You have now enabled sleep tracking on your Apple Watch. Go to bed, and your laptop will take care of everything else.
When you wake up, you can check the average amount of time you slept and in bed in the iPhone app “Health”.
Unfortunately, the Apple Watch will not be as accurate as a dedicated sleep tracking device. However, you can get a rough idea of how well and how much you sleep – just do not rely on this information if you have a serious medical condition.
