Google changed its streaming platform with the launch of Chromecast with Google TV. Instead of being a Cast device like Chromecasts before it, Google̵7;s latest dongle successor runs Android TV. If you bought one, set up your Chromecast with Google TV.
After unboxing your device and all its accessories, it’s time to set up your Chromecast with Google TV. First, plug the supplied AC adapter into an electrical outlet. Then connect the USB-A to the C cable to the electrical outlet and your Chromecast. A status light appears on the back of the dongle.
Find a free HDMI port on the back of your TV and connect your Chromecast with Google TV.
If your TV does not turn on automatically, grab the device’s remote control, turn on the screen, and change the source to which HDMI port you connected your Chromecast to.
Pick up the Chromecast with the Google TV remote control and slide off the back cover. Insert the supplied AAA batteries and replace the cover. The remote control should automatically start pairing with your streaming device.
If the pairing process does not start automatically, press and hold the Back and Home buttons on the remote control until its status light comes on. Your remote control will then connect to the Chromecast.
Now starts the installation process. Select your language from the list using the remote control.
Your TV will now instruct you to download the Google Home app to your Android device, iPhone or iPad.
Once the app is installed, open the “Home” app on your phone or tablet.
Your device will automatically detect Chromecast (1). Press the “Set Chromecast” button. If it does not, press the “+” icon in the upper left corner.
In the “Add Home” section, select the “Set up device” button.
Touch the “Set up new devices in your home” option.
Select the home you want to add Chromecast to. If you have not configured a smart home in the app yet, press the “Add another home” button. Otherwise, select your home and then press the “Next” button.
Give the home app permission to use your camera and then scan the QR code on your TV. Alternatively, you can select the “Continue without scanning” link and enter the screen code.
After a few seconds, you will be asked to accept the Google Terms of Service. Press the “Accept” button to continue.
Select a room that your Chromecast with Google TV will be stored in and select the “Next” button.
Give your Chromecast a name and press “Next” again.
You now need to connect Chromecast with Google TV to your Wi-Fi. Select your network from the list and press “Next”.
Enter your Wi-Fi password on the next screen.
With the internet connection, it’s time to sign in with your Google account. The Home app will offer all Google Accounts currently logged in to your phone or tablet, but you may need to re-authenticate yourself to continue.
Follow the instructions on the screen to continue.
Select which permissions are to be granted to the streaming dongle and then select the “Accept” button.
We are on the last stretch now. It’s time to set up Google Assistant and set up media settings. Press the “Continue” button to advance.
Let Google share your search queries with third-party apps. If the setting is off, you may not be able to find and watch some movies and TV shows with the voice assistant. Select the “Allow” button.
Then activate Voice Match. When activated, the assistant can give you personal results when your voice is recognized. Press “Next”.
Agree to let Google Assistant give you personal results when using Voice Match. Select the “I agree” button.
One of the strengths of Google TV is its recommendation engine. But before Google can suggest movies and TV shows that you might like, you need to share which services you subscribe to. Tap each item (like YouTube, Netflix, Disney +, Hulu, and HBO Max), then tap “Next.”
Ambient mode on your Chromecast with Google TV acts as a screensaver when you are not watching anything. As with smart screens, you can choose a slide show with your photos or curated art from Google. Make your selection and then select “Next”.
The installation process in the Google Home app is complete. Press the “Done” button and finish setting up your Chromecast on your TV with the remote control.
So you do not have to juggle multiple controllers, you can use Chromecast with Google TV’s remote control to turn on your TV, turn up and down the volume, and switch sources.
Use the remote control to click on “Set up remote control” and follow the on-screen guide. You will go through by programming your controller and verifying that it can control your TV.
Your Chromecast with Google TV is ready to go. Select “Start Exploring” to start using your streaming device.
The Google TV interface is slightly different if you come from a digital TV receiver or TV. Each service that you specified that you had access to during the installation process will have its app installed on your Chromecast. Make sure you are logged in to each streaming service so that you can start watching recommended movies and TV shows when something new comes up.
One thing to keep in mind when you become familiar with your new Chromecast is that the software running on the streaming device is called Google TV, which is also the name of Play Movies & TV. Do not get confused between the two when looking for something to look at.
