Even if you pay for YouTube Premium, you are not exempt from ads. YouTube stops adding ads before advertising and middle-of-page ads, but content creators still have their own ads embedded in videos. These product placements can be even worse than ads, and they are not the only annoyance embedded in videos. To put it nicely, YouTube is starting to have problems with distractions.
While you can always manually scrub past a wordy introduction, an annoying ad, or a protracted end screen, an open source extension called Sponsor Block can automatically skip all this junk for you. It uses a crowded database to instantly bypass sections of videos that users have marked as distractions. And recently, sponsor blocks were added to a third-party YouTube app, making it more accessible on mobile.
Step 1: Install YouTube Vanced
YouTube Vanced is a great third-party YouTube app that has tools that are not in the version of the app pre-installed on your phone. This includes the ability to use a true black theme and several YouTube Premium features, including background games.
After complaining that the installation process was too complicated, the developer behind this popular open source app packed all the tools needed in a new app called Vanced Manager. Use the wizard linked below to help load the Vanced Manager APK file, then use the manager to page load the other two files to use YouTube Vanced.
Step 2: Activate sponsor blocks
Once installed, open YouTube Vanced and select your avatar icon in the upper right corner, then select “Settings”. Select “Sponsor Block Settings” and enable “Enable Sponsor Block (Beta)”.
Step 3: Customize sponsor blocks
On the next page, below What to do with different segments is a list of all the sections of videos that Sponsorblock can skip. The different colors displayed next to each of these will appear in the video progress bar, indicating where users have identified this type of content.
Press each “Segment” (Sponsor, Intermission / Intro, Endcards / Credits, etc.) one by one and select from three options: “Jump only, automatically”, “Show jump button” and “Do nothing.”
“Just skip, automatically” automatically skips the segment and by displaying a bowl message informing you which segment was skipped. This is the default action for all segments. The “Show skip button” will have a small “Press to skip” button displayed on the right side of the video (although I could not get the button to appear during my testing). Finally, you can play the episode by switching to “Do nothing”.
Step 4: Test out
Now open a video in Vanced and check the progress bar. If you see different colored sections, it has been taken from this. If there are no colors, sponsor block users have not tagged this video, which means the sections will not be skipped automatically.
When you watch the video, you will see playback skip during the introduction, sponsored messages and other disturbing parts, and a toast message will inform you which section was skipped.
Step 5: Help the community (optional)
Sponsor blocks are mass claims, which means that it is society that labels each video. You can help improve the service by adding these segments yourself. To do so, return to the sponsor block settings page and activate the “Activate new segment extension” slider.
Now that a video is playing, a new icon will appear in the upper left corner that looks like a play button with a shield. When selected, a set of tools is displayed (while holding the phone) which allows you to add a segment to the video. Use this tool on videos that you find that are not selected to enhance the experience for everyone who uses the service.
