How to take back the 9 tile network in Android 11’s quick settings «Android :: Gadget hack

Android 11 has many new features that you can expect, including a sleek new embedded media player. Instead of a constant notification, your audio controls are now pushed up in the Quick Settings panel when playing music. But to make room for this new media player feature, your total number of quick settings tiles must be cut from nine to six.

This new Android 11 change may not be welcomed by some because six tiles in a three-by-two panel may seem too small. Fortunately, the developer Tulsadiver has put together a small Magic module to solve this very issue. Even better, there is no extra fluff – the sole purpose is to reset the 9-tile layout in your quick settings panel, just like Android 1

0 used to have.

Requirement

  • Root access
  • Pixel device running Android 11 (mod not tested on other models)
  • Magic installed

Step 1: Download the 9 Tiles QS module

To start things up, you need to download the Magic module, then tap the link below from your Android 11 Pixel device. Depending on your browser, you may need to press and hold Save File.

It should be mentioned, Tulsadiver was granted permission to use the base for this 9 Tiles QS module from j to 4n, the developer of the Edge Sense Plus mod.

Step 2: Install the module

As this is a third party module and is not listed in the official Magic Repo you will need to install it manually. Open Magic Manager, tap the “Modules” icon at the bottom, then tap the “Install from storage” button. It should show your most recent downloads, but if not, navigate to the location where the file is saved (the “Download” folder by default).

Note: If you are on the old version of Magic Manager, go to “Modules” from the hamburger menu instead.

Click on the “9tiles.zip” file once, and it will start installing. It may take about a minute to process, so give it some time. When done, press the “Restart” button at the bottom to restart the device and activate the module.

Step 3: Enjoy your quick setting panel with 9 tiles

Now it’s time to check and make sure the module was working on your device. Swipe down to access your quick settings panel as usual and see – you should now see a grid 3 with 3 with 9 icons. If not, press the “Edit” pen icon and drag and drop more tiles to the quick settings panel. You need at least nine tiles now when making changes here.

(1) Standard 6 QS tiles you get from stock Android 11. (2) The new 9 QS tiles you get from using this Magic module. It’s just like Android 10 again!

Even with the embedded media controls when playing music, the 9 tiles should remain most if not all the time. I have seen it push up the bottom column up and temporarily, temporarily go to layer 6 tiles. But the latest version of this mode no longer does that during my testing and remains active all the time now.

Final remark

If you ever want to go back to the default number of quick settings tiles, you can do so with ease. Open Magic Manager, go back to the “Modules” section and then press “Delete” under the item “Tulsadiver increased tiles to 9”. Press the “Restart” button at the top to remove the module and restart the device. After the reboot, it is back to the default settings as usual.
