When you think about it, isn't life just a big open-world RPG just begging to be conquered? We all have a certain number of specific tasks or tasks that we have to do every day as clockwork. Sometimes these items on our to-do list can be tedious and cause us to lose motivation. What if you could take these tasks and turn them into something amazing instead? Now you can.
With Habitica: Gamify Your Tasks you will finally be able to take your real jobs and put an exciting RPG spin on them like never before. Instead of dragging your feet as you complete your tedious and lifeless tasks, you can think of your next and what lies ahead. Create unique mission names, custom rewards and even form parties online to help others achieve their goals as well.
Step 1: Install Habitica
To get started on your new epic mission to improve your daily life, you will need to get a hold of Habitica. It is available for both Android and iPhone, so go to one of the links below to get it installed.
When you open the app for the first time you get a Welcome screen that you can browse or skip completely. When you get past this screen, you are on the main login page where you can create your account. You can simply log in with your Google or Facebook account to get started right away. But you can also set up an email account with them if you prefer.
By creating an account you can not only save your progress, but it can also use your character on multiple devices and platforms. Very useful for the convenience and ease of use!
Once you have logged in with your preferred method, you will now start setting up your hero profile. Choose your display name and username from here or leave them at their default values. These will be attached to your profile so you can connect to the online features with other party members. But you can always change both of these names at any time if you wanted to. Press "Next" to continue.
Now that your profile name is taken care of, it's time to set your hero. You can change body size, skin color, hair type, hair color, add extra accessories and change the shirt color as well. If you wanted, you could even hit "Randomize" so it generates a look for you. There are also more premium options that you can get later to smooth out your style. Press "Next" to continue.
Since your hero's appearance is completely clear, you now have the choice of the types of tasks or missions you personally want to handle. For example, if you try to make sure you keep up with your homework from your classes, you would definitely choose "School". Select all items in the list that you want to work on for your tasks and then press "Let's begin" to begin your journey.
You will now go through the brief introduction to Habits and what they are. Depending on which items you have chosen to work with, it will generate a quick list of sample assignments that you can look at, which they call "habits". These are intended as examples, but if any of them are suitable for your needs, you can keep them. Generally, you will wipe them off and start fresh with your own set of habits.
Touch which habit you want to delete, then press "Delete" at the top right and finally "Delete task" to wipe it from your list. Do this for any pre-generated habits you don't want to keep so you can have a clean slate for your own tasks.
From here you can start adding your very own user-defined habits by tapping the plus button at the bottom of the screen. This is a one-off task that only needs to be completed once. Give your assignment a title of any kind and include any specific assignment listings directly below it if needed. Get creative and think of some cool mission names from your favorite games to motivate you even more.
Now determine if this habit has positive or negative attributes that can be assigned to it. For example, if you can miss or fail the task in any way, it should have both positive and negative characteristics. This ensures that you may have rewards for completing the task or be penalized for not succeeding in exactly the same way. After that, you can choose the difficulty level of the habit and then choose how often it is restored.
Now, just press "Create" to complete the process. Start by adding a handful of basic tasks until you get the rest of the installation done. Also, do not complete any of your tasks yet because you have not configured your reward system with custom actions yet. Once you have become familiar with everything, you can come back and dive into the neat chalky details with even more key tasks for you to take care of.
Click the Dailies tab at the top down, then you will get a basic tutorial on what this feature is. These are tasks you would do daily, such as washing dishes. As with the most important information from the Habits section, some basic information based on what you chose earlier will be generated here. If you need to remove them and start new, select the item and then press "Delete" just as before.
Now you can press the plus button and start setting up a handful of your daily tasks that you want to add to your list. Just like before, try to be creative with your titles and descriptions so that you smile every time for increased motivation. Works every time, trust me. With Dailies you have some more options to set than with the most important tasks from the habits.
If you wanted, you could add a checklist to your specific job or task if it is more than one thing. Click on the text box and type what you want here, and it is automatically saved in the list. You can organize the list by pressing and dragging the six-point icon to the right. You can also remove any item by pressing "X".
Select the difficulty with this specific task and then select the scheduling system from there. Enter your start date and then choose how often to complete the task. If you select "Daily", you can decide how many days you have to wait until you get the assignment to complete again. The same goes for the other time options, so keep track of what works for your personal information.
If you really want to make sure you never forget to complete your daily tasks, you can also set a reminder to warn you. You choose what time you want to get to the reminder and it will make sure you know when it's time to complete that task. You can also add optional tags as your list begins to grow over time. Press "Create" to complete the process.
If you have a specific to-do list for the day that differs from both of the other two list options, you can use the "To Do" tab. A task list consists primarily of one-off tasks, which usually have to be completed at a certain time and date. Consider habits such as your main assignments, diaries that require daily tasks and To-Dos as side adjustments that randomly show up as time goes by.
Delete all items in the generated list and then press the plus button to get started. When you create a to-do list, it follows almost the exact same format as Dailies. Go through and give your assignment a title and add any notes that may be helpful to you. Create the checklist, set the level of difficulty, schedule a due date, and then set any reminders. You can also add tags here.
When your To-Do list is ready and ready to be saved, press "Create" to end the process. You will now see the checklist of items you created and can tap any box when the task is complete. When all items on the list are complete, your mission is completed and you can then receive whatever reward you have specified. Again, do not start completing any tasks until your reward system is installed.
Finally, you can go to the reward system to use when completing your assignments! When you complete your chores and tasks you will get a certain amount of gold to spend on rewards for yourself. By default, you can buy equipment that you can use to build your character and make them stronger. Basic weapons, armor and drinks are available to help you get started.
The real fun comes from creating your own set of rewards and setting how much gold each one is worth. There should be a predefined reward item labeled "Reward Yourself." By pressing that entry you can create your first customized reward and get to the good stuff.
Add a title to your rewards entry and include notes that may be helpful here. Under "Cost" you can choose how much gold is required to buy this reward. Do not set it too low or too high, but you may have to play with this number and find a convenient amount for future use. You do not want to regret the reward system, so finding a perfect balance is crucial.
When you are satisfied with the reward title name, notes and gold costs, press "Create" to finish the process. When you get enough gold by completing your custom assignments and tasks, you can tap the Gold icon on the right to buy the reward. That's all there is to it!
Now you have to go back and start expand your mission lists and add even more rewards. Once you've built up a decent number of tasks and rewards based on your own life, it's safe to start tackling your assignments one by one. Do your best to complete them on time and try not to cheat! Cheating does nothing for your own self-confidence and only hurts your personal development.
When you have successfully completed a task on your list, touch the plus icon to complete it and get some experience points and gold. If you missed the deadline or failed to complete a specific task, press minus to confirm the failed assignments. You will lose a certain amount of HP when you fail a mission, so keep that in mind. Try to supplement them as much as you can to stay alive!
