Controller support is limited on Windows computers. While the latest generation of console controls will work from the Windows box, the latest generation of gamepads such as PlayStation 3's DualShock 3 also require custom drivers.
An earlier version of this article describes the use of MotioninJoy to use your Sony PS3 controller as a joystick on your Windows computer. Unfortunately, MotioninJoy was a proprietary part of software that became malware over the years. Fortunately, you do not need to infect your computer because there is an open source option in ScpToolkit. Do not use MotioninJoy.
How to install ScpToolkit
ScpToolkit must change some system drivers to make the controller's work so it is not the safest installation process. Continue with caution, follow our instructions and do not click on anything you do not understand.
Download the latest version of ScpToolkit from the project's Github page, open the installer and accept the terms ̵1; if you read them of course. You will see a dialog with a list of installation options:
You probably do not need Gamepad Analyzer and Debug Info Collector, but you should install everything else.
The installation process takes a few minutes. You should take this time to find your PS3 controller and connect it with a USB cable. Once the tool is installed, the toolbox will prompt you to run the driver installer. Click on "Run" and you will see a list that will now include your controls.
Click the "Initialize All Connected Devices" button, let it install, and then click "Next." This will configure the controller to be recognized as a PS3 controller and install some drivers.
The next screen is for Bluetooth support, which you may not want because it requires a dedicated Bluetooth dongle to be "sacrificed". Really, there is a large "WARNING" label on this screen, because it is incredible to install it on a wireless music cone. You can have a very bad time.
If you really want wireless support, you need to connect the offer dongle, make sure it is the only device in the list and then click "Initialize All connected devices ".
Otherwise, you can't beat "Next" and skip this process.
The next step is to install a virtual Xbox 360 Controller driver, which will trick Windows into believing that your PS3 controller is an Xbox 360 controller.
To install the driver, click "Install Virtual Xbox 360 Controller Driver" and click "Next."
After It will ScpToolkit install a Windows service to handle communication with the controller.
Click "Install Windows Service" and click "Next". You are now ready and you should be able to use your PS3 controller in any game that supports Xbox 360 controllers. It's virtually every game that supports a controller, so go nuts. RELATED: Here's how to remap any controls to the keyboard keys on Windows and MacOS
