Save your home and work addresses

One of the first things you should do with Google Maps is to save your home and work address. To do this, open Google Maps, press the menu button – represented by the three horizontal lines in the upper left corner – and tap Your Places . You will see records for Home and Work . Enter your addresses. You can now ask Google Maps to navigate to Home or Work instead of having to enter the address. You can also type in searches like "restaurants near the job" and get a list of useful suggestions.

How to Get Directions Quickly

Most of us are familiar with the Google Maps Navigation feature that offers voice-controlled, by-turn directions, but did you know there is a dirty shortcut to launch it? You can search for a location or touch it on the map and then press and hold the blue The direction button at the bottom right and Google Maps select the best route and start straight into the navigation mode. If you want to adjust the route or change your mode of transport, just press it once, make your changes, and then press Start .

How to share in real time mode

If you want to share your location in real time with family or friends, then press the menu button (three rows in the upper left corner) and select Location Sharing . You can click Add People icon at the top right to select how long you want to share your location and Select People to share with. If they have a Google Account, your location will be shared with them in their Google Maps app. otherwise it will be sent as a link that they can press. You can also choose to share your location via a variety of other apps like Facebook Messenger. Anyone who shares their place with you will have their own tab at the top of the screen and you can click on it to see where they are.

How to share a site

Just click and hold any place to drop a pin. Tap the address section at the bottom of the screen to expand it, and then press Share . You will see a pop-up list of apps that you can share your location with. If someone has trouble finding your location, a picture of the front of the main building can help. Here's how to see Street View on your mobile

If you want to see a photo of your place, you need Street View. Press and hold on the map to release a PIN in your chosen location, then press the bottom where it says Lost Pin (or address) to get the information. You should see a picture of the location at the bottom of the screen. Tap it and you will start to Street View in your chosen location. You can share this street view by pressing the menu at the top right and pointing to Share .

Find things nearby

Let's face it, you don't always know what you're doing looking for. Maybe you want some gas, you are looking for a piece to eat, or you have to mail a package. Thankfully, if you tap the Explore option at the bottom left of Google Maps, you'll see a list of nearby attractions. If you scroll down, you can narrow down your search by selecting one of the categories. There are restaurants, hospitals, ATMs, gas stations and a host of other facilities. You can also search for what you need by typing the search field at the top, or doing a voice search by pressing the microphone icon at the top right.

Choose whatever you are looking for, and you will be presented with a list of nearby options with their respective distances. You will also see review results – if available – and you can often call companies or visit the site directly from the information panel. If you drop the information panel down you will see that they are marked on your map.

How to zoom a hand

Everyone usually squeezes to zoom in and out, but you can also zoom one-handedly in Google Maps. A double button partially zooms, but there is another option. Press twice on the map, leave your finger or thumb on the second time, and you will find that you can swipe down to zoom in and swipe up to zoom out.

How to view maps offline

Much of the users complain that one of the biggest weaknesses in Google Maps is the fact that you need to be online to use it. You can actually download and view maps offline with some planning. For example, if you come to New York, open the app, search for "New York" and tap the field at the bottom where it says "New York". Then select the button marked Download .

New York is huge, so you are invited to choose an area. After that you can name your map and save it. Your saved maps will be listed in the Google Maps menu, which is available by tapping the three horizontal lines at the top left when you start the app first. Take a look under Your sites and browse the Maps tab to find your offline maps. They will expire in 30 days, so you must update them if you do not want them to expire.

Offline maps are quite limited, unfortunately. You cannot get directions, or search maps while offline.

Save Favorite Links

You see that the latest searches come up when you press the search bar, but you can also save places quite easily, and it can be a real-time saver in the future when looking for a place again. To do so, simply click on the location you want to save on the map, expand the information by pressing the address at the bottom, and then press Save . You can choose to save it as a favorite place with the heart icon, mark it as a place you want to go or add to your list of stars. When a location is saved, the Save option changes to to Saved with the relevant icon. Enter the menu and you will find Saved Places listed under Your Places .

How to check bus and train timetables

You can also use Google Maps to check on bus and train times to any location. Just enter the location you want to travel to in the search field, press Directions and press the icon on the train at the top. You will see a list of options based on the current time.

If you want to check when a later train is available or see when the last train leaves, press where it says Exit at and enter a certain time or you can press Recent to find your latest option. You can also filter the results by transport type (bus, train, subway) and set preferences for fewer transfers or smaller walks via Options in the upper right corner.

How to see where you have been

Google Maps records your trips and you can review it via your browser. Go to this Google link and, provided you are signed in to your Google Account, you'll see a map of where you've visited the last day. You can use the calendar in the upper left corner to select specific dates or date ranges to see weeks and months.

Below the calendar, you also see alternatives to Remove History from this time period and Delete All History . You can also turn off this tracking by opening the Google Settings app and tapping Location> Google Site History . Replace it completely or select specific units that you want it to shut down. Keep in mind that if you do not have GPS on and High accuracy mode set in Location in your Settings all the time, you may see some approximate locations that are far away where you really were.
