There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that the recently released Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and Note 20 are two of the best phones released this year. Their large screens, powerful hardware and S-pens mean they are excellent productivity devices – but did you know that they can both play Xbox games via cloud games? That’s right, you can sit down on your couch and play console-quality games with just your humble smartphone. This is how it works.
Note: This feature is currently in a preview phase and registrations will end on September 4th. The preview period ends on September 11, but the function starts for everyone on September 15. If you want access to a preview before September 15, it is best to get skates on.
What you need to get started
You need a few things to get started streaming Xbox games to your Galaxy Note 20. First, you need a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 or Note 20 Ultra. Either model is good, but right now this feature is limited to Note 20 models only. Expect other Samsung devices to eventually have access to this game, but right now it’s just for the last two Samsung notes.
You probably also need a Bluetooth controller. Some games work well with touch screen controls, but many require a controller. Microsoft’s Bluetooth Xbox controls are not surprisingly the best choice for this, but one of our favorite controls should work. We tested it with GameSir G4s, and it worked perfectly. But if you are worried about compatibility issues, we recommend that you buy.
Finally, you will also need a stable Wi-Fi connection. Cloud games use game material that is streamed via the internet, so it is an extremely data-heavy process, and you will need a decent internet connection to handle it. Wi-Fi is probably the best choice for most people, but some lucky people will be able to use a 5G connection to stream – but remember that you probably need unlimited data or a very high capacity.
Once you have your note 20, controller and Wi-Fi connection, we’re ready to go.
Sign up for the Xbox Game Pass and sign up for the preview
Next, you need to sign up for the Xbox Game Pass and sign up for the streaming service itself. Xbox Game Streaming is currently in a preview phase and as such you need to apply for it before you can use it. If you bought a note 20 from Samsung, you probably received an email inviting you to the preview. If you do not have it, you can find the application form on the Project xCloud website. You must apply before you can access the service and applications for early preview will end on September 4, so skip it quickly if you have not already done so. Once you have applied, you will receive an email receipt confirming your application and (hopefully) confirmation of your approval shortly after.
Of course, you also need to subscribe to the Xbox Games Pass at the Ultimate level, which costs a princess fee of $ 15 a month. It’s the most expensive level, but it gives you access to absolutely everything, so if you have a computer, you can also access the entire library of Xbox games for Windows as well. Your first month costs only $ 1, so you have the chance to find out if it’s worth your money or not.
Download the Xbox Game Streaming app and start playing
Now that you are registered, you need to download the Xbox Game Streaming app. After downloading, launch it and log in to the Microsoft account you applied for access to.
When you are logged in, you get a list of games to play – and it’s a big list. You can add games to your Play Later list and select games to play now. To play a game, simply select it from the list and press Play. After a few moments of charging – during which time your power starts – you are transported to your game. If your chosen game requires a controller, the app alerts you before it starts, giving you the chance to connect a controller.
