How to use text-to-speech in disagreement

Although Discord is a good platform for voice communication, you may not be able (or willing) to speak with your own voice. To get around the problem, you can use Discord’s built-in text-to-speech (TTS) feature.

You can use text-to-speech on your own Discord server or on another server with a text-to-speech enabled channel. These steps only work for Discord users on Windows or Mac, as Discord̵

7;s text-to-speech features are not available for Android, iPhone, or iPad users.

Enable text-to-speech on a Discord server

To use text-to-speech on Discord, it must first be enabled in a channel on your server. If you are a server owner or administrator, you can do this in your channel settings.

To change your channel settings, go to your server in the Discord desktop app or on the Discord website. Hold the channel over the channel name and then click on the “Settings” gear icon next to it.

Hold the mouse pointer over a Discord channel name, and then tap the setting gear icon next to it to access the channel settings.

In the “Settings” menu for your channel, select the “Permissions” tab on the left.

If you have roles for individual user groups, select the role in the “Roles / Members” list, otherwise select the “@ all” option.

A list of available permissions is displayed on the right. Make sure to activate the option “Send TTS messages” by clicking on the green check mark icon to the right of it.

Select “Save Changes” at the bottom to save the updated role setting.

Once enabled, users with that role (or any user, if you selected the “@everone” role) can send text-to-speech messages in the channel you changed.

You must repeat these steps to enable text-to-speech in other channels.

Using Text-to-Speech On Discord

If you are in a channel on Discord with text-to-speech messaging enabled, you can send a TTS message by typing /tts in the chat, followed by your message.

For example, write /tts hello activates your browser or the device’s text-to-speech features and repeats the word ‘hello’ together with the nickname of the Discord user who sent the message.

The message will also be repeated in the channel as a text message for all users to view.

To send a TTS message on Discord, type / tts followed by the message in the chat box.

Mute all text-to-speech messages on discord

If you are not a server owner or administrator or just want to turn off all text-to-speech messages, you can do so from the Discord user settings menu.

To access this, click on the “Settings” gear icon next to your username in the lower left corner of the Discord app or website.

In the “User settings” menu, select the “Text and images” option on the left. Under the “Text-to-speech” category on the right, click the slider to disable the “Allow playback and use of the / tts” command option.

To deactivate all TTS messages on Discord, click

Disabling this setting disables text-to-speech for you on Discord, regardless of each individual server or channel setting. You will be able to read the text element of a text-to-speech message as normal in the channel, but you will not be able to hear it repeated to you.

You will also be prevented from using /tts command yourself. You must repeat these steps and re-enable the option in your user settings if you want to use it yourself later.
