While you wait for the White House and Democratic negotiators to return to the table and possibly meet a deal for one new coronavirus relief package, with a second stimulus control to help people cope with the economic consequences of Covid-19 pandemic, there may be good news if you did not get the first stimulus check.

The IRS has sent at least 160 million payments as of August direct deposits, posted checks and prepaid EIP debit cards, but up to 9 million people who qualify for the first stimulus check have still not received it and may not even know they can claim it.

Included are non-filters that have not had to file a federal tax return in the past two years, but must register to receive their money. (Some people with dependent also lacks parts of his check and has until September 30 to apply for it.) Internal Revenue Service sends instructions via email in message letters, but we tell you how to get started and what you need to know.

What is the deadline for requesting an initial payment?

Those who use the tool Non-Filers must request payment by October 15. Then the only way to claim a payment is to file a federal income tax return.

How will the IRS contact you?

The IRS will send letters – as it calls IRS 1444-A – around September 24 to those who may be eligible. The agency said the letter will be sent from an IRS address. You can see a copy of the letter here (PDF) in English and Spanish.

How do you claim your payment?

If you did not have to file a federal tax return, the letter asks you to use the IRS’s non-filter tool, where you can provide certain information to claim your payment.

If you had to file your federal taxes but did not do so, the letter directs you to file your taxes electronically 2019 tax return immediately and then use the IRS’s Get My Payment to check the status of your payment.
